(Minghui.org) A 73-year-old woman in Qingyang City, Gansu Province, was sentenced to five years for practicing Falun Gong, her family learned in late September 2025.
The wrongful conviction of Ms. Li Ruihua, born in July 1952, stemmed from her arrest on August 20, 2024, while she was visiting family in Zhenyuan County, which is under the administration of Qingyang City. After she gave a person an amulet which had messages about Falun Gong she was seized by officers from the Chengguan Police Station. They raided her home the next day and took her to a local detention center. She was denied admission after she failed the required physical exam.
The police released Ms. Li on bail on August 23, 2024, only to take her back into custody on July 18, 2025. It was unclear whether they had her undergo a physical exam as they claimed, so her family only knew that she was sent to the Ning County Detention Center that day. Ning County is also under the administration of Qingyang City.
The Zhenyuan County Court secretly tried Ms. Li without notifying her family. When her loved ones went to the detention center in late September 2025, they learned from the guards that she had been sentenced to five years.
Ms. Li developed some medical conditions and the detention center requested that she be released on parole but the court insisted that she be kept in custody. She is now appealing the verdict.
This is not the first time Ms. Li, a former manager of the local commerce bureau, has been targeted for her faith, which she took up in March 1996 and credits for helping her recover from numerous diseases, including breast cancer, congenital heart disease, migraine headaches, rheumatism, frequent colds, bronchitis, back pain, emphysema, and stomach issues.
She was given one year of forced labor following an arrest on March 25, 2000. After her release, she lived away from home to avoid further persecution. The police deceived her into returning home and arrested her soon afterwards. She was sentenced to three years in prison and was released on October 8, 2005. At the time she was unable to care for herself and her joints were swollen and her limbs were weak. In June 2011, she was forced to live away from home again and did not return until four years later.
Ms. Li’s husband, Mr. Kou Chuangjin, a government official, was also repeatedly arrested for practicing Falun Gong. He was sentenced to three years in prison following an arrest in June 2011.
The repeated persecution of the couple deeply traumatized their daughter. She developed clinical depression in 2001, around the age of 14, and still suffers from the condition.
