(Minghui.org) Sixty five members of Canada’s parliament signed a joint statement and strongly condemned the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) 26-year-long persecution of Falun Gong and its escalating transnational repression of practitioners. Canada’s Minister of Public Safety issued a letter to express his concern regarding the severity of the transnational repression and its continuing impact on practitioners. He encouraged them to meet with and communicate with government authorities.

As of December 10, 2025, International Human Rights Day, 65 Canadian federal senators and members of parliament signed a joint statement to strongly condemn the CCP’s 26-year-long persecution of Falun Gong and its escalating transnational repression.

An Increasing Number of Representatives Condemn the Transnational Repression of Falun Gong

The Joint Statement reads, “We, the undersigned Parliamentarians, stand in solidarity with the Falun Gong community and strongly condemn the Chinese Communist Party’s escalating transnational repression (TNR) and ongoing, 26-year persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.”

The signature collection from members of parliament began in July this year, and as of December 10, 2025, World Human Rights Day, the number of members of parliament who signed the petition increased to 65. In the Joint Statement the members of parliament, “Urge the Chinese government to immediately end its persecution of Falun Gong and to cease all acts of transnational repression on Canadian soil.”

The CCP’s transnational repression is an extension of the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China since July 1999. In the statement, it says, “Over the past 26 years, Falun Gong practitioners in Canada have endured surveillance, harassment, intimidation, assault, disinformation, cyberattacks, and other forms of CCP repression. These actions not only harm the Falun Gong community and disrupt Shen Yun, but also threatens the integrity of Canada’s institutions, sovereignty, and core democratic values.”

Minister of Public Safety Is Concerned About the CCP’s Severe Transnational Repression of Falun Gong

According to the statement, “In 2025, bomb and mass shooting threats were sent to venues hosting Shen Yun – a classical Chinese dance company founded by Falun Gong practitioners – in four Canadian cities, among over 140 such incidents reported globally. Some of these threats have been traced to sources in China. These acts are part of a broader, global CCP-led campaign of sabotage aimed at suppressing Falun Gong and Shen Yun.”

According to Ms. Dai Gongyu, spokesperson of Canada’s Falun Dafa Association, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree sent a letter to the Association in response to the issue of the CCP’s transnational repression. The Minister was concerned about the severity of the CCP’s transnational repression in Canada and its lasting impact on local practitioners.

Anandasangaree thanked Ms. Dai for bringing the issue to his attention, and said that he’s communicated the issue with the person in charge of transnational repression in the Ministry.

The Minister encouraged the Falun Dafa Association to continue reporting to and communicating with the department.

MP: Transnational Repression Should Not Be Allowed to Continue

Senior Canadian MP and chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Falun Gong, Judy Sgro, said, “I think these statements are extremely important for people to see that we are standing up against the kind of persecution that many of the Falun Gong are having to endure.”

Senior Canadian MP Judy Sgro

“It’s unfair, and it’s up to many of us to stand up and be a voice for those who are voiceless,” said Sgro, “[Transnational repression] is terrible, it should not be allowed to continue.”

She said that for decades, Falun Gong continues to have to cope with the CCP’s misinformation, “The Canadian government is very much working, very much concerned about that issue,” she said. She also warned people to stay clear-headed and not be fooled by the CCP’s disinformation, “I think we have to start working on people, getting them to say, don’t believe anything that you read [about what the CCP says] unless you are part of that activity yourself, because it’s a huge campaign that’s ongoing, and it’s ongoing around the world, and we all have to keep that in mind.”

She added that the Canadian government is, “Taking steps to deal with the issue of transnational repression and to try to expose it for what it is, which is disinformation and mistruth.” She said that the government is also, “...moving forward with their own plans as to how to better and more effectively deal with the whole issue of transnational repression.”

MP Garnett Genuis, Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Falun Gong, said the CCP’s suppression of Shen Yun exposes the CCP’s insecurity. “It shows the insecurity of that regime, that it’s constantly trying to threaten arts displays, but we press on, we need to press on and defend our freedom in this country,” he said.

Garnett Genuis, a Conservative MP who has long championed human rights issues in Canada, condemned the CCP’s transnational repression of Shen Yun.

Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman said about the CCP’s suppression of Shen Yun, “It’s bomb threats, it’s lawfare, it’s silencing, it is all of the tools of a brutal communist dictatorship that stretches his arms across the world to silence the voices who are standing up for freedom, for democracy, for the rule of law, for everything that is right.”

Melissa Lantsman, Co-Deputy Leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, condemned the CCP’s transnational repression.

Regarding the CCP’s transnational repression of Shen Yun, James Bezan, Shadow Minister for National Defence, said, “To think that the Chinese regime in Beijing thinks that this [Shen Yun] is a threat to their administration, the way they conduct themselves, just because they’re associated with Falun Gong, is very sickening to say the least. It just shows how paranoid Xi Jinping and his administration really is.”

Conservative MP James Bezan condemned the CCP’s transnational repression of Shen Yun.

MP Bezan’s bill, C-219, defines “transnational repression” in Canadian law for the first time. Regarding the bill, he said that it, “...will actually strengthen sanction laws in Canada, including going after those that are doing transnational repression here and making sure that Canada is not used as a safe haven for those corrupt foreign officials violating human rights and enriching themselves at the same time in China, as well as in other countries around the world.”

MP: We Should Push Back Against Beijing’s Bullying

According to the Joint Statement, “The CCP’s campaign against Falun Gong clearly exemplifies the very dangers the G7 has called on the world to resist together.”

In 2025, more than 400 political figures from around the world, including Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia, and Taiwan, spoke out against the CCP’s escalating transnational persecution of Falun Gong. In a statement issued in June 2025, the leaders of the G7—comprising the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan—reaffirmed their commitment to protecting communities and condemned the transnational repression as a serious threat to rights, freedoms, national security, and national sovereignty.

MP Michael Cooper condemns the CCP’s transnational repression.

Michael Cooper, Canadian Conservative MP and Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs, said that the CCP’s transnational repression remains a serious issue, and that the international community should not yield to the CCP’s threats. “It’s important that Canada work with her allies to push back against Beijing’s bullying. We shouldn’t be turning to Beijing, and we see that with this government,” he said. He calls on the government to, “...quickly move forward with a foreign influence registry...” to block Beijing’s interference.

Canada passed its Countering Foreign Interference Act (C-70) in 2024, aiming to combat foreign infiltration and manipulation of Canadian politics and society. The bill mandates the establishment of a Foreign Influence Transparency Registry, which requires public registration of anyone associated with a foreign principal, and strengthens intelligence sharing and criminal penalty mechanisms.

MP Shuvaloy Majumdar

MP Shuvaloy Majumdar, also Vice-chair of the Subcommittee on International Human Rights, said that the Canadian government should start taking meaningful action on how to deal with transnational repression that occurs in Canada. “We should protect religious freedom in this country at every turn, including for our Falun Gong practitioners. We should protect freedom of expression at every turn from foreign governments trying to suppress the freedom of Canadians to express themselves however they wish,” he said.

Besides the support from the MPs, many Canadians have signed petitions to support practitioners’ efforts to end the persecution. During the sessions in the Parliament, several MPs have read aloud petitions from their constituencies demanding the CCP to stop its persecution and transnational repression of Falun Gong.
