(Minghui.org) Wangling Prison, located in Wangling Town, You County, Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province, holds male Falun Gong practitioners who have been sentenced for their faith. The 10th Division is the main division designated to detain them. The guards brutally torture them in attempts to force them to renounce their belief. Many practitioners have been tortured to death as a result, and many more have become injured or disabled.

Methods of Torture

Brainwashing

Every day, practitioners are forced to watch videos or read materials slandering Falun Gong and its founder, or propaganda that promotes the theory of evolution or glorifies the Chinese Communist Party. They are also forced to do daily “homework” and punished if the guards decide that their homework fail to pass their requirements. Some practitioners were deprived of sleep or not allowed to rest until 2 a.m.

Before every meal, the practitioners are ordered to shout slogans to defame Falun Gong and its founder or sing songs to praise the communist regime. Those who refuse are not allowed to eat.

The guards also printed copies of Falun Gong founder’s photo and pasted them on the practitioners’ stools. Some practitioners were even forced to urinate on the photos.

Physical Torture

Physical torture includes sleep deprivation, denying use of the restroom, starvation, and long hours of sitting, squatting, or standing motionlessly. Other tortures include having boiling water or ice water poured over one’s head, having one’s head submerged in water, being stabbed with sharp objects, being slapped in the face, being stomped on, or having the body stretched in extreme positions.

When subjected to sleep deprivation, in addition to not allowing the practitioners to sleep at all, the guards sometimes wake them up every 30 minutes or every hour to disrupt their sleep.

Torture often takes place in “blind spots” in the prison, that is, in areas not visible to surveillance cameras.

When practitioners develop medical conditions as a result of the torture, the guards force them to take unknown drugs under the pretext of medical care.

The guards often verbally torment practitioners. Because practitioners are detained and therefore unable to take care of their families, the guards accuse them of being “bad people,” “heartless,” and “ignorant of their filial duty to care for their parents,” in order to increase their mental pressure.

An inmate once said to the practitioners, “Once you are here, there are only two ways out. One is for you to “transform” (renounce Falun Gong), and the other is to be carried out feet first.”

Nearly 30 practitioners are still detained at Wangling Prison, with the oldest being in their 80s. The guards often threaten, “There are dozens, even hundreds, of ways to torture you.”

Mr. Lei Yangfan was transferred to the strict management division on January 18, 2025, and monitored by several inmates. Because he refused to give up his faith, the guards put him in solitary confinement for 15 days, during which time he was given very little to eat.

The guards instructed the four inmates assigned to monitor Mr. Lei to slap him in the face 100 times every day. They could use their hands, books, or shoes. The inmates also used cigarettes to burn Mr. Lei’s soles until they bled and then did not get his injuries treated. His feet later became swollen.

The inmates also used a hard object to roll over his hand, feet, and legs, causing bruises. They hit him on the buttocks so hard that the skin broke and festered. The inmates also wouldn’t let him use the restroom.

Mr. Lei was also waterboarded. Three times a day, the inmates grabbed him by his hair and dunked his head into a bucket of water. They wouldn’t let go until he almost drowned. He couldn’t lift his right hand after the first round of torture and later struggled to lift his left hand.

At night, Mr. Lei was not allowed to sleep until 2 a.m. and was woken up every half an hour. He had to get up at 5 a.m. and made to stand. The torture lasted until March 19, 2025, when Mr. Lei became pale and could not walk. He fainted while en route to the hospital. Mr. Gao barely survived and was taken back to the prison one month later to face even more abuse. In early 2024, he was forced to stand for long hours every day. He fainted and was taken to the prison hospital.

In late May 2025, Mr. Gao was accused of “biting” inmate Liu Junde on the neck while using the restroom one night. The prison filed a lawsuit with the Xiu County Court seeking to sentence him to 3-5 years for the new “crime.”

One inmate pushed Mr. Deng’s head down and slammed it against the metal bar of the bed, causing his scalp to bleed. The injury was over three centimeters (about one inch) long and required stitches.
