An 80-year-old resident of Gaoyi County, Hebei Province, died on April 29, 2023, after enduring years of persecution for his faith, including two forced labor terms totaling five years.

Mr. Gao Xinxian went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong shortly after the persecution began on July 20, 1999. He was arrested and taken to the Gaoyi County’s Liaison Office in Beijing. Geng Jinshu, a section chief, went to pick him up. Geng confiscated the over 70 yuan in cash that he had with him and cuffed him to a tree stump in the courtyard for nearly four hours. It was so hot that he almost fainted when he was finally untied from the tree stump.

After escorting Mr. Guo back, Geng took him to the Gaoyi County Police Department, where he seized the 40 cents he still had on him and cuffed him to a tree. Geng later moved Mr. Guo to the Gaoyi County Detention Center, where he was held for one month. The guards there once instructed inmates to kick and punch him.

Mr. Guo made a second trip to Beijing on October 14, 2000 and was arrested again. While held at the Gaoyi County Police Department, chief Li Qingzhang led his officers to slap him in the face more than ten times. They also cuffed him to a tree. While he was in custody, officer Geng raided his home and arrested his wife, who managed to escape three hours later.

Mr. Guo was then taken to the Gaoyi County Detention Center. Four weeks later, he was given two years of forced labor and admitted to the Shijiazhuang City Labor Camp. He was released in October 2002, only to be arrested one year later.

Section chief Niu Shengbai led several officers and scaled the fence of Mr. Guo’s home on November 5, 2003. They raided his residence and took him to the Gaoyi County Detention Center. He was then given three years of forced labor at the Shijiazhuang City Labor Camp.

The guards subjected Mr. Guo to various forms of abuse, including forcing him to sit on a small stool or run military drills for long hours on end. They later also had him do hard labor. Once someone kicked a ball, which hit Mr. Guo in the right ear. He immediately lost his hearing in that ear, which later oozed out pus. He never recovered his hearing. Another time the guards forced him to stand under the scorching sun for two hours until he fainted. They took him to the hospital and released him on parole after he was discharged.

Mr. Guo suffered severe memory decline after he was released. He wrote down his suffering, but the documents were confiscated by the police. They also harassed him frequently, causing his health to further decline over the years. He died on April 29, 2023.
