A Baoding City, Hebei Province, resident died on March 1, 2014, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhao Dezhen took up Falun Gong in March 1998 and regained health. After the persecution began in July 1999, she felt compelled to tell people that Falun Gong was nothing like what’s depicted in the hate propaganda.
More than ten agents from the Mancheng District Domestic Security Division broke into Ms. Zhao’s home one October day in 2000 and arrested her. The police cuffed her hands to a heating pipe during the interrogation. An officer slapped her in the face numerous times when she refused to answer their questions. The police also threatened to smash her home and bar her daughter from going to college or joining the army.
Ms. Zhao was taken to the Mancheng District Lockup after the interrogation. The guards there forced her to do hard labor for more than ten hours a day. The rest of the time she was made to sit facing a wall. She was released 12 days later, but not before her husband was forced to pay 1,000 yuan fine.
A group of officers knocked on Ms. Zhao’s door on September 10, 2002 and carried her all the way to their cruiser. They interrogated her with torture at the Dule Police Station. The next day, she was taken to the Yi County Lockup. Her family was forced to pay 3,000 yuan before she was released on September 19, 2002. The very next day, however, the police arrested her again and took her to the Mancheng District Detention Center.
The police came to interrogate her at the detention center. She refused to answer questions, and they had her family kneel in front her in an attempt to shake her will. Guard Jia Ruiqin also punched and kicked her, all the while using the sole of a shoe to slap her in the face. After Jia became exhausted, she cuffed Ms. Zhao’s hands to the metal door.
Two months later, the police sent Ms. Zhao to the Balizhuang Labor Camp after already extorting 2,000 yuan from them. Her loved ones paid another 5,000 yuan to the labor camp and they released her one week later.
The police seized Ms. Zhao at home one night in August 2003. She developed some medical condition that night and was released.
The relentless persecution eventually claimed Ms. Zhao’s life on March 1, 2014. Her husband, who did not practice Falun Gong, died before her, having lived in fear for decades.
