Jilin Woman in Her 70s Sentenced to Three Years for Practicing Falun Gong

April 20, 2025 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Jilin Province, China

(Minghui.org) A Shulan City, Jilin Province resident in her 70s was sentenced to three years on April 2, 2025 for her faith in Falun Gong. Due to her poor health, she was denied admission to a local detention center and was allowed to go home. The police threatened to keep trying to take her into custody.

Ms. Guo Qingfen’s ordeal stemmed from her arrest back on June 12, 2018, when she was on her way to visit a relative. Her home was subsequently raided and over 40 Falun Gong books were confiscated. Ms. Guo was held at the Jilin City Detention Center. The police delivered a criminal detention notice to her family on June 14, 2018. Months later, she was sentenced to three years, with a three-year probation.

During Ms. Guo’s detention, her husband fell critically ill. He passed away not long after she was released on probation in November 2018. Over the next several years, the police harassed her on a regular basis to make sure that she did not “violate her probation conditions.” There were two particular incidences of harassment, on September 23, 2019 and September 10, 2020, when the police attempted to take photos of her and tried to trick her into signing her name on a blank piece of paper.

Ms. Guo finished her probation around November 2021, only to be arrested again on June 5, 2024 and later released on bail.

When Ms. Guo traveled to her daughter’s home on December 28, 2024, she was arrested by officers from the Railroad Police Station in Jilin City. The police claimed that she was a “wanted” person.

Although Ms. Guo was released shortly after, the local court called her on January 17, 2025, and ordered her to sign certain documents. She wasn’t given details about the documents. On February 5, 2025, when she was at her daughter’s home, she received a call from the court again, ordering her to return home. She said she wouldn’t come back until the end of the Chinese New Year holiday season (January 29 – February 12, 2025).

When she returned home around mid-February 2025, the court summoned her to sign another document. This time, they revealed that it was related to her prison sentence in 2018, but still didn’t provide any details about it. Ms. Guo had long finished her probation in 2021. By law, her latest arrest in June 2024 should not have had anything to do with her prior probation.

The court also accused Ms. Guo of “trying to escape.” After the court confirmed that the police no longer had an open case on her, they allowed her to go home but threatened that they “were not done with her yet.

Ms. Guo was taken to the Shulan City Court to stand trial on April 2, 2025. She testified that the police had been trying to frame her by giving her Falun Gong books to take home and then taking photos of the books at her home. When she mentioned that those who persecute good people would face consequences one day, the judge became angry and said, “Who has faced the consequences?” He ordered the bailiff to remove Ms. Guo from the courtroom but kept her daughter, who came to attend the hearing, inside. He announced moments later that Ms. Guo had been sentenced to three years with a 5,000-yuan fine.

The police took Ms. Guo to the Jilin City Hospital for a physical examination after the trial. Due to her poor health, the local detention center refused to admit her. The police took her to the Jishu Police Station and held her in a metal cage overnight, without giving her any food. She was very weak when the police took her home the next day. The police took Ms. Guo back to the hospital for another physical examination on April 10. The result of that examination isn’t clear.
