Frederick Newcomb and Cecelia Crowley (NTD Television)
Frederick Newcomb and Cecelia Crowley saw Shen Yun at the Lincoln Center in New York on April 2.
“Oh, that was marvelous. That was such a great explanation and a great presentation. The presentation and the message were one and it conveyed it perfectly,” said Mr. Newcomb, an investment banker and president of a financial services company.
“One of my teachers said, the culture moves from East to West, and I think today was a great example of that,” said Ms. Crowley, who has had a career in the performing arts, and today manages a financial advisory firm.
“It’s not only artistic, but it’s athletic and it shows some of the finest traits that I’ve noticed in Chinese hospitality, which are compassion and kindness and mercy,” Ms. Crowley said. “Absolutely artistically articulated in the most beautiful sense. The costumes, the staging, the music, the instrumentation, everything was superb. And I thank you. It was really a wonderful experience.”
“You’re doing wonderful work, and I think it should be much appreciated, and will be much appreciated around the world. People don’t realize the contribution that has been there in the past, what is now, and what will be the future,” Mr. Crowley said. “The future of the world is in our hands. And we won’t outlive it, but it will outlive us. And the good work that’s being done like this will transcend time.”
“I think everyone should bring their family to this because this is a wonderful family experience. Anyone from 5 to 85 would enjoy this, and understand the true nature of Chinese people, and to understand that they’re open-hearted, and they’re kind, and they’re artistic, and it’s a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful experience, and I think more people should experience it,” Ms. Crowley said.
The name Shen Yun means “the beauty of divine beings dancing,” and Ms. Crowley explained that traditionally, all the arts had similar aspirations.
“I was taught as a performer that in the arts, we imitate the divine. That when you are an artist, we might approach heavenly things. And that was greatly demonstrated today,” she said.
“The colors were terrific, the production design was terrific, and there was not a letdown moment from start to finish. It was just higher and higher, more inspirational, more inspirational,” Ms. Crowley said.
William and Lynn Nolan (NTD Television)
William Nolan, a business owner, and his wife Lynn saw Shen Yun in New York on April 3.
“It was superb. The dancing, the meaning, the stories that were told, they’re profound. They truly are profound and I was very moved. Both of us were moved to tears almost,” said Mr. Nolan.
“It touched my heart like nothing before, it was just so beautiful. It’s the most beautiful ballet I think I’ve ever seen in my life and the stories are just so powerful, and emotional and spiritual.
“That’s true China. Communism is not true to any culture, communism is pure evil. And this dance brought out the true culture of China, which is so powerful. And it will live for another 5,000 years, but communism will die,” said Mr. Nolan.
Frank Dellapolla (The Epoch Times)
Retired ballet dancer Frank Dellapolla saw Shen Yun in New York on April 6.
“The artistry is impeccable,” said Mr. Dellapolla, who has performed with ballet companies across the country and in Europe and Asia.
“First of all, you didn’t know what to expect. It was something that, you know, you come in, you see the commercials, you see the people outside, but it opens up this whole cultural heritage that you didn’t know existed with the old age in China, and it gives a different perspective on what’s going on over there now, and what’s going on over here, and how it reflects,” Mr. Dellapolla said.
“I’ve performed for decades, and to see these guys out there doing every show, my mom was saying, she was amazed at how they can go on stage and do that so consistently, so precisely, so beautifully. It is a massively ballad, wonderful, deep, and important artistic statement.
“Their skills are impeccable, they’re classically trained,” he said, remarking on the technique he saw. “The feet are beautiful, the women have that incredible extension and the ability to control and move.”
“Not just technique though, it’s the artistic expression behind it, there’s a real sense of—they bring a culture, they bring expression, and they bring the control, so they’ve integrated both the artistry and the technique.
“But it’s, you know, you can’t look at just one thing. You have to look at the overall package. The artistry is complete, right? It’s a very complete package,” he said.
Mr. Dellapolla said that what he and possibly many others don’t realize from only watching Shen Yun commercials is that what the artists are sharing is not “only Chinese.”
“It is the expression of a more ancient cultural Chinese sense of Buddhism, religion, heritage, free [from] communism, which I think for a lot of us in this country now is important because this country has become so dry and so devoid of spirituality, and too easily taken in by socialism, communism, that they really need to learn how important, how pristine, how deep things were before communism.
“That was one of the better messages in the show, I think. A lot of the people in the West would be surprised because they wouldn’t have that knowledge of what’s coming in. So that comes through on top of the impeccable artistry,” he said.
Frank and Joanne Licsko (NTD Television)
Frank and Joanne Licsko, both artists, saw Shen Yun in Vancouver, Canada, on April 13.
“It’s a nice mixture of the movie industry and the physical. The gestures and the movements actually created this storyline. That was very well done, excellent, very very inspirational,” Mr. Licsko said.
“The experience of the 5000 year history of China, I think, comes through like gold and drops in the atmosphere. It’s really quite beautiful.
“It allows you to feel the consciousness of the universe. And I was very impressed with that. It was inspirational from the point of view of being reminded that there is, in fact, a god. And it’s such a fantastic opportunity to be able to think like that. Because in our modern world we don’t think like that anymore. Everything is crowded. So, it gave me a really beautiful, artistic, inspirational purity—which is almost like drinking some kind of medicine—is really quite beautiful.
“It gave me much more of an understanding of what Falun Gong is. As to why they’re upset over it in China? I have no idea. But all I know is that it should be something that should be embraced, because I think it really brings a kind of an enlightenment into our lives and in a beautiful way—very artistic, to be honest with you. There’s beauty, there’s truth, and there’s the spirit of goodness. And all of those things come out in that performance,” he said.
Daniela Röthlingshöfer-Müller (NTD Television)
Soprano singer Daniela Röthlingshöfer-Müller saw Shen Yun in Füssen on April 5.
“I find what I heard and saw today incredibly moving. I also thought it was nice that the music served the dance and the performance. The music is incredibly touching, but it doesn’t push itself into the foreground,” she said.
Virginie Valentin (NTD Television)
Virginie Valentin, a health coach, saw Shen Yun in Amnéville on April 10. She came from Luxembourg to see Shen Yun.
“It’s magical, magnificent! It relaxes, soothes, and revives... And at the same time, it’s historic because it gives us a little glimpses of Chinese history,” she said.
The sophrologist described her feelings: “I felt emotions, really calming at first... This music too, the orchestra had a vibratory impact on the body. I really felt that in addition to the visual wonder of the colors before us.”
“It carries; it lifts; it evolves! It’s dance! I even carry dance in my voice now, which suddenly calms down. It’s magic. It carries us, takes us away, leads us and soothes us, truly carries us to peace. We really need it right now.
“More inner peace so we can share it with those around us. Yes, it’s a beautiful story!” she concluded.
