37-Year-Old Hebei Man Serves Second Five-Year Prison Term for His Faith, Held in Strict Management Team Since March 2025

(Minghui.org) Mr. Lu Gang, 37, from Julu County, Hebei Province, was secretly sentenced to five years in prison following his arrest in July 2023. His lawyer submitted an appeal on his behalf on February 20, 2025 and was denied visits with him on April 11.

Mr. Lu, born in September 1987, was arrested on July 20, 2023 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. Prior to this recent arrest, he was given five years following an arrest on March 9, 2016. He was released one year ahead of time.

Mr. Lu’s family was not notified about his case status following his latest arrest. They only got a notification on June 14, 2024 to say that he was sentenced to five years and was admitted to prison. They weren’t given his detention notice, indictment, trial notice, or verdict.

Mr. Lu was admitted to the Jidong No. 4 prison on May 7, 2024. When he refused to enter the building, about four officers stomped on him and shocked him with electric batons. After he was brought inside, he was pepper sprayed and shocked with electric batons a few more times. The prison later ordered every inmate to give a blood sample. Mr. Lu refused and was again subjected to electric shocks. To this day, he still has burn marks on his body.

On May 27, 2024, Mr. Lu was transferred to the Jidong No. 5 Prison. Because he refused to do hard labor and held firm in his faith, he was denied family visits. His father managed to find out about the phone numbers of the prison in mid-July 2024 and called them. No one picked up the phone until the last number. That person promised to check which cell Mr. Lu was being held.

Mr. Lu was finally allowed to call his family on the night of July 28, 2024. They told him that they hired a lawyer for him. The lawyer went to the prison on the morning of September 20, 2024 but was not allowed to meet with Mr. Lu. He returned that afternoon but was still told he could not meet with his client. When he warned them that he had the right to sue them the guards finally granted a meeting.

With a guard standing by monitoring the meeting, Mr. Lu did not dare talk about the abuse he suffered. The lawyer encouraged him to be brave and he shared the above-mentioned abuse of him. The guard threatened to put him in solitary confinement for two days.

The lawyer submitted Mr. Lu’s appeal to the Xingtai City Intermediate Court on February 20, 2025. Around mid-March 2025, Mr. Lu was put in the strict management team, where he was not allowed to shower or sleep. Beatings and verbal abuse were commonplace. A water dungeon and other forms of torture instruments were used on practitioners. His lawyer tried to visit him on April 11, 2025 but was turned away, with the excuse that those held in the strict management team were barred from meeting families or lawyers.
