While serving a four-year term for her faith in Falun Gong, Ms. Bai Yuzhi was brutally tortured and force-fed unknown drugs. The abuse caused her to become blind in both eyes, vomit blood, and suffer kidney failure. She was in critical condition on several occasions, yet the authorities refused to release her on medical parole and instead extended her term by four months. On her scheduled day of release on December 25, 2006, the local 610 Office agents attempted to take her to another detention facility. They relented upon her family’s strong protest.

While Ms. Bai later regained some vision, she still struggled to see clearly. She remained unable to stand or take care of herself. Her hands kept twitching uncontrollably. She had seizures from time to time and was plagued by persistent nerve pain. After eight years of constant suffering, she passed away around March 2025. She was 63.

Ms. Bai, an employee of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, took up Falun Gong in 1994. After the Chinese Communist Party began to persecute the mind-body practice in 1999, she held firm to her faith and was repeatedly arrested.

Given 3-Year Term of Forced Labor in October 1999

Ms. Bai was given three years of forced labor on October 1, 1999. While being held at various labor camps, a mental hospital and a drug rehabilitation center, she held a hunger strike for nine straight months. Her weight dropped from more than 110 pounds to less than 80 pounds. Despite this, the guards injected her with unknown drugs, making her feel like bugs were crawling all over her body. During a hospital checkup around October 2000, she was found to have no blood pressure or EKG reading. Only then did the labor camp guards realize that she was on the verge of death and called her family to pick her up.

Three More Arrests in 2001

Ms. Bai was arrested again in October 2001 and given an unknown term of forced labor. She went on a hunger strike in protest and was released in less than one month. She lived away from home to avoid further persecution, only to be arrested again in September 2001. The local police chief beat her to unconsciousness and she did not come to until three days later. The chief left her on the cold cement floor during those few days. After she regained consciousness, she was taken to a labor camp, but was denied admission due to poor health.

Ms. Bai was released, but taken back into custody in December 2001 for distributing Falun Gong materials. She was taken to the Shijiazhuang City Second Detention Center. She went on a hunger strike for four months and was released on bail. Even before she recovered, the police harassed her at home again. She went into hiding to avoid the persecution.

Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison

Ms. Bai was arrested at her rental place in Shijiazhuang City on August 31, 2002. The police beat her so badly that she was beyond recognition. She staggered when walking, and she was emaciated with dark circles under her eyes.

The police used their connections to have the Shijiazhuang City Labor Camp admit Ms. Bai. She went on a hunger strike for more than two months and was then deceived into eating food again. Only ten days later she was issued a formal arrest warrant. Her family tried to hire a lawyer to represent her, but all of the local law firms had been barred from defending Falun Gong practitioners.

The Yuhua District Court in Shijiazhuang City held a secret hearing at the labor camp in December 2002. Her family was not notified of her trial or her new detention location. They only found out in early January 2003 that she had been transferred to the Shijiazhuang City Second Detention Center.

Ms. Bai went on a hunger strike again and was in critical condition in February 2003. Her family requested her medical parole, but was rejected and also denied visits with her. She was sentenced to four years in prison some time around March 2003. Her family was not notified of her conviction.

Ms. Bai began to vomit blood in early May 2003, but the detention center did not render her any medical treatment. Despite her condition, the authorities still transferred her to the Shijiazhuang City Second Prison, as her family learned on May 20, 2003.

The prison guards instructed inmates to watch Ms. Bai around the clock. She again went on a hunger strike in protest and was brutally force-fed. She later became blind in both eyes and had to remain bedridden all day. Her family’s request to have her released on medical parole was repeatedly rejected. They were also denied visits with her.

The Hebei Province Women’s Prison was founded in the summer of 2005, and Ms. Bai and the other jailed female Falun Gong practitioners were moved there.

Guards at the new prison kept abusing Ms. Bai and very rarely allowed her family to visit her. The items her loved ones sent to her often did not reach her. Other practitioners were not allowed to help her. Once a practitioner named He Lanhua helped her tidy up her clothes and was stripped of her right to receive family visits, purchase daily necessities and contact loved ones.

Ms. Bai’s condition kept worsening, and she suffered kidney failure. She later became completely bedridden and incapacitated. Her parole requests were again repeatedly rejected. The prison further extended her term by four months and did not release her until December 25, 2006. The local 610 Office agents still attempted to take her to another detention facility after her release, but relented upon her family’s strong protest.

Ms. Bai never recovered from the damage sustained during her imprisonment. She died around March 2025.
