(Minghui.org) Mr. Han Chunlong, of Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province, was arrested on October 2, 2023 and sentenced to a four-year prison term on March 25, 2024. He was subjected to “correctional programming” and denied family visits for 45 days, after being admitted to Jinzhou Prison in August 2024.
Below is additional information Minghui.org recently received regarding Mr. Han’s arrest and prosecution, simply because he practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Han was leaving the Mukden Palace in Shenyang City in Liaoning Province around 1 p.m. on October 2, 2023, when security officer Chen Qiang stopped him and asked what he was doing there. Mr. Han explained that he was there for a tour. As he didn’t have his ID with him, Chen demanded to check his two cell phones, which he just used to send mass text messages about Falun Gong.
Not wanting to be arrested, Mr. Han tried to leave, but was pushed to the ground by five officers. They snatched his bag and took him to the nearby Huangcheng Police Station. During the interrogation, the police said that someone reported him for sending text messages about Falun Gong. They then took Mr. Han and the tipster, Liang Junyuan, to the Shenhe District Police Department for further interrogation.
The police took Mr. Han to an interrogation room, and restrained him in a metal chair. He refused to answer their questions such as who supplied him with the cell phones or who developed the software to send out mass text messages.
After the police finished eating, they dragged Mr. Han by his arms all the way to the gate of the police department, carried him to a police car and drove him to a hospital for a physical examination. He was found to have high blood pressure and a severe heart condition. He was deemed unfit for detention, but the police still took him to the Shenhe District Detention Center. The doctor told them, “We will admit him as long as you tell your supervisor about it.” The police made a call and the detention center accepted Mr. Han.
Two officers from the Shenhe District Police Department came to interrogate Mr. Han again two weeks later. He still refused to answer their questions. After a month, two prosecutors from the Dadong District Procuratorate came and said they were in charge of Mr. Han’s case.
The Dadong District Procuratorate approved Mr. Han’s arrest on November 7, 2023. He was transferred to the Dadong District Detention Center three months later, despite the fact that he was still suffering from high blood pressure (systolic pressure being over 190 mmHg, when the normal range is 120 mmHg or lower.)
Another officer came to interrogate Mr. Han again after a few days and threatened to sentence him to at least seven years if he didn’t cooperate with them. He remained silent again.
On February 1, 2024, the Dadong District Procuratorate indicted Mr. Han, with the charge of “undermining law enforcement with a cult organization,” the standard pretext used to criminalize Falun Gong practitioners in China.
Mr. Han refused to be represented by a court-appointed lawyer, but the presiding judge, Zhu Lina, still appointed a lawyer for him. The judge held a secret hearing about his case on February 27, 2024. When Mr. Han demanded to see the actual items of the prosecution evidence presented in court, the prosecutor said, “I can’t do it!”
Mr. Han asked the judge to play the audio files in his confiscated cell phones and have the witness appear in court to accept cross-examination. The judge refused.
Mr. Han pointed out that no law in China criminalizes Falun Gong and that the prosecutor failed to show how his practicing Falun Gong harmed anyone or society. He further condemned the judge for appointing a lawyer to represent him against his will and enter a guilty plea for him, even after he objected to it.
Mr. Han also questioned the judge as to why his family wasn’t present at the hearing. The judge said they informed his sister of the trial, but she couldn’t come. Mr. Han called his sister during the hearing. She said that the judge only called her five minutes before the hearing started and she lives in Jilin Province, which is hundreds of miles away.
The Dadong District Court sentenced Mr. Han to four years with a 30,000-yuan fine on March 25, 2024. He appealed to the Shenyang City Intermediate Court. During the hearing of his appeal case, judge Yu Xiaowei interrupted him and stopped him from talking, when he mentioned that Falun Gong wasn’t on the government’s cult list and that the Chinese General Administration of Press and Publication lifted the ban on Falun Gong books in 2011. Yu told him, “You shouldn’t promote Falun Gong here anymore.” She ruled to uphold his original verdict on May 15, 2024. Mr. Han was admitted to the Jinzhou Prison in August 2024.
Because Mr. Han didn’t swing his arms as instructed during a walking session on October 13, 2024, the guard director, Zhang Zhiming, summoned him to his office. Zhang ordered Mr. Han to squat while he talked to him. Mr. Han refused to comply, insisting that he wasn’t a criminal. In retaliation, Zhang handcuffed his hands behind his back and put him in solitary confinement for a month.

Mr. Han’s family was not allowed to see him when they went to the prison on November 1, 2024. A guard said that he “made serious mistakes,” so he was put in solitary confinement for “correctional programming” [in order to force him to renounce Falun Gong]. The guard also threatened to extend Mr. Han’s prison term. His family asked to talk to the guards in Division Nine but they were not allowed to.
The family went to the Liaoning Province Prison Administration Bureau on November 8 and demanded that the prison immediately end the “correctional programming.” The bureau responded that they couldn’t reverse the prison’s decision to put Mr. Han on “correctional programming,” but they could possibly have the prison call the family and explain the situation.
The family received a call from a guard from Division Nine around 7 p.m. that evening. The guard said that Mr. Han was put on “correctional programming” from October 13 to November 12, because he didn’t “obey the prison rules.” The guard added that if after a month, his attitude still didn’t change, they would extend the programming by two weeks. He urged the family to return in December 2024, as they would have a greater chance of having their visitation request approved then.
Mr. Han’s family later confirmed that his “correctional programming” was indeed extended by two weeks and he was forced to sit on a small stool for hours every day from October 13 to November 26, 2024.
Mr. Han’s family filed a motion to reconsider his case with the intermediate court on January 22, 2025, but it was rejected on March 27, 2025.
