Letter from Senator Sam Singh

Senator Sam Singh stated in his letter, “I am writing to express my support for the 33rd Anniversary of World Falun Dafa Day. Celebrated on May 13th, Falun Dafa, also known as Falun Gong, should be acknowledged and celebrated.

“The day May 13th is significant to this celebration because Li Hongzhi, the creator of Falun Gong, gave his first lecture on this day in 1992 to a schoolhouse in Changchun to only around 180 people. A few months afterwards, Li became a “Master of Qigong” and was authorized to teach Falun Gong throughout China.

“Falun Dafa uses the ideas of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance, or forbearance, in order for practitioners to improve their health and wellness. Practitioners utilize meditation and qigong exercises, where many have seen great health benefits and an increased sense of calm. Along with physical benefits, Falun Dafa has led many to become more selfless, have inner balance, and greater awareness through truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance. This practice also connects modern day life to traditional Chinese culture in order to obtain a higher state of being and spirituality.

“Although given their immense popularity throughout China and acceptance by the government, the Chinese Communist Party has outlawed the practice and promotion of Falun Dafa, claiming that they were a religious cult and goes against the country's atheist beliefs. This caused immense violence towards those practicing Falun Dafa and destruction of Falun Dafa books and teachings. However, Falun Dafa has been able to spread their practices across the world, including the United States, where their beliefs have been accepted into society. The right to practice one’s religion or beliefs is an integral part of our U.S. Constitution, and it is pivotal that we acknowledge and welcome others’ religious ideas into our communities.

“Therefore, I would like to acknowledge the 33rd Anniversary of World Falun Dafa Day that is celebrated throughout the great state of Michigan and around the world. I wish the continued success of practitioners of Falun Dafa in all of their future endeavors.”
