Elderly Jiangxi Woman Hung Up in Prison While Incarcerated for Practicing Falun Gong, Still Hospitalized 6 Months Later

(Minghui.org) Ms. Li Shuiqing from Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, was brutally tortured while serving a three-year-and-ten-month term for her faith in Falun Gong. Around November 2024, she was hung up by her cuffed hands behind her back (see image below), causing her to become incontinent and her wrists were sprained.

The Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison (also known as Nanchang Women’s Prison) then put Ms. Li, around 76, in the prison hospital. Six months have passed, and she is hospitalized and receiving treatment. This information was from an insider, who doubted if the prison notified Ms. Li’s family of her abuse and injuries.

Ms. Li, who retired from the Jiujiang Second National Cotton Factory, credits Falun Gong, which she took up in 1996, for resolving her various diseases, including tracheitis, asthma, pyelonephritis, allergic ulcerative colitis, high blood pressure, stomach problems, and arthritis.

After the Chinese Communist Party launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Li held firm to her faith and was repeatedly harassed and arrested. Her latest prison sentence stemmed from her arrest on July 13, 2020. The police took her to a police hospital and released her on bail on August 5, 2020. After that, they kept harassing her and threatened to put her back in the police hospital or throw her in jail.

The Lianxi District Court in Jiujiang City heard Ms. Li’s case in its subordinate Yongxiu County Court on May 26, 2021 and sentenced her to three years and ten months with a 20,000-yuan fine. Due to her poor health, she was allowed to go home and serve her sentence.

Officers from the Lianxi District Domestic Security Division came to Ms. Li’s home on December 14, 2023 and took her to the Lianxi District Hospital for a physical examination. She was then driven back home.

It is unclear what the health exam result was or whether Ms. Li was deemed fit for detention, but the police returned on December 21, 2023 and took her straight to the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison. They did not say whether she was ordered to serve the remainder of her prison term or a full term from that day onward.

Ms. Li is not the only Falun Gong practitioner tortured at the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison, which used death row prisoners and drug dealers to carry out the persecution with the incentive of term reductions. These inmates in turn went all out to torture practitioners, often resulting in injuries or even deaths.

Ms. Liu Hexiang was abused and became critically ill. Yet the prison refused to release her on medical parole. She completed her three-year term in December 2023 and died on March 29, 2024. She was 70.

Ms. Lyu Sanxiu, who is serving a three-year term, was tortured to the point of being unable to sit or stand. The 77-year-old was in critical condition yet the prison insisted she complete her term, which is set to end in December 2026.
