After Over a Decade of Prior Incarcerations, 61-Year-Old Shaanxi Woman Sentenced 4 Years for Practicing Falun Gong

May 6, 2025 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Shaanxi Province, China

(Minghui.org) A 61-year-old woman in Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, was sentenced to four years and fined 16,000 yuan for practicing Falun Gong, Minghui.org learned in late April 2025.

The wrongful conviction of Ms. Wang Guaiyan, born in September 1963, stemmed from her arrest on October 12, 2023. Officers from the Dongfeng Road Police Station broke into her home that day and confiscated her computer, cell phone, flash drives, clothing, hats, and other personal belongings. She was later released on bail after the Baoji City Second Detention Center refused to admit her due to her poor health.

A group of agents from the Dongfeng Road Police Station, the Weibin District Police Department, and the Jintai District Police Department, arrested Ms. Wang again on April 11, 2024, while she was reading the Falun Gong teachings at practitioner Ms. Chai Xiufang’s home. The police raided Ms. Chai’s home and seized her, Ms. Wang, and four other practitioners.

Ms. Wang was taken to the Baoji City Second Detention Center. The Jintai District Procuratorate later indicted her. She made two court appearances, on September 25 and October 28, 2024, before she was sentenced on an unknown day. She is currently appealing her verdict.

Since her arrest, Ms. Wang’s daughter, Ms. Zhang Yiwen, who resides in Japan, has been calling for her release. Ms. Zhang said that her mother, a teacher at a vocational and technical college, was repeatedly arrested for practicing Falun Gong, resulting in her spending less than five years with her mother when she was a child.

Three Years of Forced Labor (2001-2004)

Ms. Wang went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in August 2001 and was arrested and given three years of forced labor.

At the Shaanxi Province Women’s Forced Labor Camp, Ms. Wang was subjected to constant beatings and verbal abuse. She was often seen with injuries on her face and bumps on her head. Her clothes were covered with bloodstains from being pricked with needles (a form of punishment). The inmates sometimes grabbed her hair and slammed her head against the wall. They also knocked her down and stomped on her face. They forced her to stand for long hours, and handcuffed or tied her up. Her hands and feet were swollen as a result. She was also made to do the heaviest manual labor.

Ms. Wang refused to wear an inmates’ uniform in the summer of 2004 and was tied to bed frames. The inmates slapped her face with their shoe insoles. They did not allow her to sleep or use the restroom. When she urinated in her pants, they used her clothes to wipe the floor and tossed it afterwards. This was repeated numerous times over the span of a month.

In September 2004, the inmates yanked Ms. Wang’s hair to beat her. They pinched, twisted, and stomped on her stomach. They also hit her knees with a wooden stool.

The guards later put Ms. Wang in a warehouse and instructed four inmates to watch her around the clock. They forced her to do hard labor without breaks during the day and they tortured her at night. They tied her hands behind her back and hang her up to a window frame. They pulled her up and down like a pulley. Her screams were heard throughout the building. This nightly hanging torture went on for several days.

Ms. Wang’s term was extended by three months and she was released in November 2004.

Six-Year Prison Term (2009-2015)

Ms. Wang and her husband, Mr. Zhang Chunlin, were arrested on July 8, 2009 and taken to a local hotel where she was restrained in a metal chair to be tortured. She managed to escape but was captured on the third day and taken to the Weibin District Detention Center. Her husband was released in early September 2009.

The Weibin District Court sentenced Ms. Wang to six years at an unknown time and she was admitted to the Shaanxi Province Women’s Prison in 2011.

Ms. Wang and other jailed practitioners were subjected to various forms of abuse, including beatings, being tied up, made to stand for hours, electric shocks, sleep deprivation, solitary confinement, force-feeding, injections with toxic drugs, denied bathroom use, force-fed urine and human waste, sexual harassment, and forced labor.

Ms. Wang remained firm in her faith despite the torture. Guard Du Ying put her in the strict management team, cuffed her hands and beat her with police clubs.

Ms. Wang was released in September 2015.

Another One-Year Prison Term (2016-2017)

Ms. Wang was arrested again on June 20, 2016 after being reported for putting up stickers which had information about Falun Gong. The arresting officers from the Shenlong Police Station took her to the Baoji City Second Detention Center.

She stood trial at the Weibin District Court on October 27, 2016 and was later sentenced to one year. She served time at the detention center and was released on June 18, 2017.

Multiple Other Arrests

Besides her labor term and two jail terms, Ms. Wang was also twice held at a brainwashing center, in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Additionally, her employer worked with the police and held her at a hotel for an unknown amount of time in July 2008 prior to the Beijing Olympics.

After another arrest on December 28, 2015, Ms. Wang was detained for 15 days. While hosting a study session of Falun Gong teaching at her home on May 8, 2018, Ms. Wang and her guests were arrested after her neighbor reported them to the police. She was detained for ten days. Not long afterwards she was arrested again on June 24, 2018 and detained for another fifteen days. She talked to a man about Falun Gong on her way home on June 24, 2019. He reported her to the police and she was detained for 15 days.
