To avoid being arrested, he was forced to live away from home from then on. The hardship took a toll on his health. He passed away on May 10, 2024, after 22 years of displacement. He was 67.

While Mr. Wang escaped, the six other practitioners who were involved in intercepting TV signals were all arrested over the next few weeks. The police shot Mr. Xu Zhaobin in the leg and nose on the night the TV signal was intercepted. He and four other practitioners were later sentenced to heavy terms by the Anshan City Court: Mr. Wei Zhiyi to 20 years, Mr. Shen Hailong to 18 years, Mr. Xu to17 years, Ms. Li Guihong to 15 years, and Ms. He Xiaoqiu to 14 years.

An insider revealed that she was interrogated several times while being held at the Anshan City First Detention Center. Each time, she was carried out on a stretcher and left in the hallway, where people could see she was injured all over and bleeding. According to a witness who saw her body after she died, her trachea was sliced open and there were cuts under both of her armpits. The witness suspected she was a victim of the Chinese Communist Party’s organ harvesting crime.

Excerpt from Mr. Wang’s Criminal Complaint Against Jiang Zemin

In 2015, Mr. Wang filed a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former head of the Chinese communist regime who initiated the persecution. Below are excerpts from his complaint that documented why he took up Falun Gong and some of the persecution he suffered.

“I began to practice Falun Gong in 1995. The practice teaches people to live by the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance to be a good person. In addition to turning me into a better person, Falun Gong also improved my health. My stomach condition, prostatitis, and tuberculosis disappeared, and I was full of energy.

“In July 1999, Jiang Zemin ordered the unprecedented persecution of Falun Gong. All the state-run media—TV, radio, and newspapers—were filled with lies smearing Falun Gong.

“Back then, I was working for the Anshan Tower Manufacturing Factory. All the Falun Gong practitioners who worked there were monitored at work. The police and residential committee staffers also harassed me on a regular basis.

“Lingshan Police Station officers showed up to harass me again around 9 p.m. on December 9, 1999. I wasn’t home at the time, but my family told me about the harassment when I came back. That night, I decided to go to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong.

“I was arrested in Beijing and taken back to my local police station. Officer Cui Yongquan slapped me in the face with his shoe over 30 times. My face and mouth were badly swollen and I had tremendous difficulty eating. After a 30-day administrative detention, I was given another three months of criminal detention.

“When I was finally released and returned to work, my manager deducted 2,000 yuan from my salary and forced me to pay another 3,000 yuan as bond so that I would not return to Beijing to appeal again.

“In addition to the financial persecution, the factory manager and others often harassed me and ordered me to renounce Falun Gong. I was humiliated and discriminated against at work. Finally, I quit.

“On the evening of January 23, 2001, the eve of the 2001 Chinese New Year, the state-run TV channel broadcast the Tiananmen self-immolation hoax. After that, the persecution and propaganda campaign attacking Falun Gong escalated. Many members of the general public went from supporting us to resenting us. To raise awareness about the persecution, we began to distribute flyers and look for other ways to speak up.

“As other practitioners and I were working to intercept the TV signal to broadcast fact-clarifying videos on February 16, 2002, the police surrounded us. I managed to escape, but was put on the wanted list and forced to live away from home.

“During that time, the police often sneaked into my home and installed tapping devices to monitor my family’s conversations. Several of my relatives were harassed or arrested as well. The 296-yuan monthly low-income subsidy issued to my wife, who’d just been laid off, was stopped after only two months, leaving her and our school-age child in tremendous financial difficulty. The police also attempted to bribe my friends to try to find out where I was. During major holidays, the police stayed outside of my parents’ home to be on the lookout for me. All of my family members were under so much mental pressure because of the persecution.

“While I was on the run, I was unable to find a job and I couldn’t go out very often. I was also saddened that I was unable to take care of my elderly parents or fulfill my obligations as a father.

“The pressure I am under, be it physical, emotional or financial, would be unimaginable for most people. For all these years, it’s been not just me, but so many Falun Gong practitioners have suffered such brutal persecution, endured being separated from their families, or even been persecuted to death.”
