(Minghui.org) When Ms. Liu Chunping’s two sons visited her at the Shandong Province Women’s Prison on July 24, 2025, they were heartbroken to see her wearing shorts. Due to health reasons, the 85-year-old woman always had to wear long pants even during the summer. The octogenarian is being illegally detained because she practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been targeted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
Ms. Liu’s sons pleaded with the guards to allow her to put on long pants and to offer her food easier to chew due to her teeth problems. It is unclear whether the prison has approved the requests.
Ms. Liu, of Jinan City, Shandong Province, was seized from home by more than ten officers on July 21, 2025. She told her sons during the prison visit that the police claimed they were taking her for a physical exam, only to drag her to an ambulance and drive her straight to a detention center. The next day, they transferred her to the Shandong Province Women’s Prison to serve a one-year term given in 2022.
Ms. Liu was previously arrested in October 2021 for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong and was released on bail a few hours later. She appeared in the Zhangqiu District Court on July 26, 2022 and was sentenced to one year, with a 5,000-yuan fine, on September 9, 2022. She was taken to the local detention center immediately after her sentencing hearing but was denied admission as she failed the required physical exam.
The court tasked the Dongfeng Police Station and the Dongguan Police Station with monitoring Ms. Liu. They harassed her at least once every month in the beginning and increased the frequency to once a week around June 2025. They urged her to undergo more physical exams to see if she was fit enough to report to prison.
After Ms. Liu was seized from home on July 21, 2025, her sons checked with the two monitoring police stations. The police stations denied having any knowledge of her arrest. Just past 8:00 that night, the Dongguan Police Station called Ms. Liu’s sons and asked them to pick up her clothes at the local detention center (as she was made to wear the detention center uniform).
Ms. Liu was transferred to the Shandong Province Women’s Prison in Jinan the next day and her family was not allowed to see her until two days later on July 24, 2025.
Prior to her latest conviction, Ms. Liu was sentenced to one year in 2002 for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. She was arrested again in 2020 and released the same day, also for distributing Falun Gong materials. Her daughter was once sentenced to 10 years for practicing Falun Gong.
