(Minghui.org) An 81-year-old retired teacher in Chongqing is serving a three-year term at the Yongchuan Prison because he practices Falun Gong, Minghui.org learned recently.
Mr. Liu Shurong was arrested on June 23, 2024, by officers from the Longshui Police Station. They took him to the Dazu District Detention Center. It is unclear when he was indicted, tried, sentenced, or admitted to prison.
This is not the first time Mr. Liu has been targeted for his faith. He was previously given two forced labor terms and three prison terms totaling more than 12 years.
Two Forced Labor Terms Totaling 2 Years and 8 Months
Mr. Liu went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in October 1999, three months after the persecution began. He was arrested and given one year of forced labor at the Xishanping Labor Camp in Chongqing. Because he held firm to his faith, his term was extended by eight months.
Officer Jiang Jun arrested Mr. Liu in September 2001 in an attempt to make him expose other Falun Gong practitioners. He was kept at the Dazu District Detention Center for one month.
The board of education in Longshui Town held an event for retirees in February 2002 and emcee Luo Wenguang attacked Falun Gong. Mr. Liu refuted the slanderous propaganda and was given one year of forced labor at the Xishanping Labor Camp.
Used for Human Experiment During 2005-2008 Prison Term
After he was arrested on September 27, 2005, Mr. Liu was taken to the Dazu District Detention Center. When he went on a hunger strike in protest, he was force-fed and restrained with handcuffs and shackles.
The Dazu District Court sentenced Mr. Liu to three years in March 2006 and ordered him to serve time at the Yongchuan Prison. The guards there subjected him and other Falun Gong practitioners to various forms of abuse, including beatings, standing or squatting for hours, sleep deprivation, starvation, whipping, burning leg hairs with cigarettes, having hundreds of caterpillars crawl on their bodies, force-feeding, and being exposed to the elements.
Under the direction of higher-ups, the guards experimented on Mr. Liu to see how many rapid IV injections of toxic drugs he could withstand. They handcuffed and shackled him to a bed and inserted a feeding tube through his nostril to his stomach. Every day they administered four bottles totaling 2000 mL of fluid at a rate of 150-200 drops per minute. A female guard said, “Inject faster. If he dies, so be it.”
A young director surnamed Li said, “If you die, that’s it. It may cost the government at most 425 yuan (for the cremation fee). What is wrong with experimenting on you? This is allowed under the government’s policies. It’s legal and the order was given by the higher-ups.”
Beaten to Unconsciousness While Serving a 5-Year Term
Mr. Liu was arrested on March 9, 2009 and sentenced to five years in September that year. He again served time at the Yongchuan Prison.
The guards together with some inmates beat Mr. Liu on September 19, 2010. After he lost consciousness, they carried him to the prison hospital for emergency treatment. After that, they force-fed him for seven straight months.
Mr. Liu’s health kept declining and he was released on medical parole in late October 2011. Soon after he returned home, the Longshui Town 610 Office head, deputy town manager Wang Hong, led street committee secretary Gao Yali and director Jiang Guifang to harass him. They ordered him to sign statements to renounce Falun Gong. He refused and they left. On November 11 that year they returned and forced him to sign statements against his will.
Third Prison Sentence Served at Yuzhou Prison
Mr. Liu gave a man some Falun Gong materials on July 28, 2015. The man followed him and took pictures of him, before pushing him off his electric bike. Mr. Liu’s legs were injured and he bled. The man straddled him and called the police. Officers from the Shuangqiao Police Station soon arrived. They arrested Mr. Liu and put him in the Dazu District Detention Center.
The Dazu District Court tried Mr. Liu on October 21, 2015. The presiding judge couldn’t answer his question as to what crime he committed by practicing Falun Gong and admitted that he had no control over the legal outcome. Mr. Liu was later sentenced to two years and admitted to the Yuzhou Prison.
