(Minghui.org) A 62-year-old woman in Jiaohe City, Jilin Province, is facing prosecution for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. Her husband was so worried about her that he had a stroke and is still in the hospital.
Ms. Ren Hongxia’s home suddenly lost power on the morning of September 15, 2026. When she went out to check her electricity meter, police officers waiting outside arrested her. They also confiscated a bag of Falun Gong materials she’d left near her front door.
The police barged in and ordered Ms. Ren’s husband to turn in a white, short-sleeved shirt that was allegedly worn by Ms. Ren when she was recorded by surveillance cameras putting up Falun Gong informational materials. He refused to comply.
Ms. Ren’s husband, who is disabled as a result of polio, went to the police station to demand her release, but to no avail. Overcome with anxiety, he lost control of his limbs and was taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a stroke.
Police officer Han Jielin later called Ms. Ren’s son, who works out of town, and ordered him to deposit some money for her. It was only then that Ms. Ren’s son learned about his parents’ situation.
Ms. Ren’s son rushed home and went to the police station to seek justice for his mother. But both officers Han and Zhang Dongze, who had arrested Ms. Ren in 2025, denied being in charge of the case. Zhang said to him, “The case isn’t with the police anymore. It has been submitted to the Shulan City Procuratorate. You should start looking for a lawyer.”
But when Mr. Ren’s son went to the procuratorate on September 20 and 23, the clerks in charge said that they hadn’t received the case yet.
Over Two Decades of Persecution
Ms. Ren, born in January 1964, took up Falun Gong in 1997. After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the nationwide persecution two years later, she refused to give up her faith and has been repeatedly targeted ever since.
Arrests and Harassment
Ms. Ren went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong on February 17, 2000. She was arrested, escorted back to Jiaohe City, and detained in the Jiaohe City Agricultural Machinery Driving School. She was forced to stand for long hours every day and not given any water to drink. She was later transferred to another school and ordered to write statements to renounce Falun Gong. The authorities extorted thousands of yuan from her and threatened to seize her property if she went to Beijing to appeal again.
Ms. Ren was arrested again around 10 p.m. on July 20, 2001. Officer Cheng from the Minzhu Street Police Station clamped a pen between her fingers and squeezed them to cause excruciating pain. He then handcuffed her and tied her feet to a chair. When he removed the cuffs, she was unable to stand or walk. She was then given 15 days of detention.
At the end of 2002, Ms. Ren was held in a guesthouse with other practitioners and monitored by police and 610 Office agents. She was the only one who still remained there days before the Chinese New Year, because she refused to pay a fine. Eventually, her residential committee paid 200 yuan for her, and she was released to spend the holiday with her family.
Ms. Ren visited Changchun City, the capital of Jilin Province, in March 2003 and was arrested during a police sweep. She was detained for 15 days.
In 2008, 2009, and 2012, Ms. Ren was harassed multiple times late at night by the police and community workers.
She was arrested on May 11, 2016, and again on October 27, 2023.
Force-Fed Horseradish Concentrate for 10 Hours
On October 26, 2004, officers Ma Jinke and Zhang Yashuang from the Yongan Police Station broke into Ms. Ren’s home by climbing in through her second-floor window and arrested her. They kicked her thighs, causing deep bruising. She was admitted to the Jiaohe City Detention Center that evening.
The police took Ms. Ren back to the police station on October 28 and tortured her. They tied her to a chair, securing her feet to the legs of the chair and tying a rope around her waist to the back of the chair. They then twisted one of her hands up behind her back to be cuffed with the other hand pulled over her shoulder in the front.
One officer held her head with a towel while another stuffed a towel into her mouth. A third officer poured horseradish concentrate into her nose, making her choke. She felt like she was dying.
Every 15 minutes, the officers raised and lowered Ms. Ren’s handcuffed hands to increase her pain and poured horseradish concentrate into her nose and mouth. Her pants and shirt were soaked with sweat and horseradish concentrate.
The police force-fed Ms. Ren four cartons of horseradish. At midnight, officer Bai Mingku stomped on her chest. She felt a burning pain in her stomach, but the officers wouldn’t let her drink any water. The next afternoon, they took her back to the detention center.
By the following morning, Ms. Ren was unable to get up. Her face and chest were dark and covered in blisters. After over 10 days, the blisters disappeared and the skin on her face and chest peeled. She had a runny nose for an extended period of time, and her sense of smell was also affected.
