(Minghui.org) I am a farmer and endured immense suffering before I began to practice Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) in 1997. My husband and I were in serious debt, and our health was deteriorating. We felt there was no way out.

In 1992, our second child was born. The government fined us for violating the one-child policy, forcing us to borrow money wherever we could and making our already impoverished situation even worse.

My husband worked day and night, desperately trying to pay off the debt. However, this led to extreme exhaustion and caused him to fall ill. He was afflicted with a host of ailments, including cervical and lumbar spine disorders, a herniated lumbar disc, and sciatica.

At one point, my husband fractured his tailbone at work, and the muscles in his right leg gradually began to atrophy. Due to the cervical spine issue, he was also unable to use his hands. We borrowed more money for medical care, but his condition did not improve. Eventually, he lost the ability to walk and became bedridden.

My husband sweated heavily in the summer, so I would give him a sponge bath every day. Back then, I was frail and couldn’t turn him over, so I had to wash one side of his body at a time. He was only in his 20s, bedridden and crushed under a mountain of debt. Anxiety consumed him, and he would often break down in loud sobs.

His temper became very volatile. The worse his mood, the more prone he was to outbursts—sometimes he would tear his clothes when I tried to dress him or rip up the quilt I tried to cover him with.

I had to handle everything on my own—farming four mu (0.66 acres) of land while still nursing my son. With elderly parents and a young child to care for, plus a critically ill husband, I was absolutely exhausted. People urged me to divorce him and leave, saying, “He can’t work anymore, and you can’t handle him. You should just take your children and get out while you can!”

But I remembered when I first came here, my husband was so strong and healthy; how could I abandon him in this state? Unable to move, how would he survive? I simply couldn’t bring myself to leave him.

Later, my husband felt somewhat better and could walk again, so we started a small business. In addition to working in the fields and doing housework, I found time to collect and sort scrap materials, and my husband would drive the tricycle with his one good hand to help me sell them.

One day, when we got home, my husband couldn’t crank-start the vehicle, so I tried, but to no avail. He wanted to give up, but unexpectedly gave it one more try. As he swung his arm, I bumped into him by mistake and landed several meters away, landing right smack on my tailbone.

I immediately felt a sharp pain. Over the next few months, I lost the ability to walk, and my hands became weak—I couldn’t even hold chopsticks. My body began to waste away.

By then, I was suffering from depression and already riddled with ailments, including rheumatic neuralgia throughout my body, chronic gastric issues, congenital heart disease, and chronic bronchitis. Bone tumors had metastasized across my entire body, and the pain in my peripheral nerves was so excruciating that I would frequently pass out. This terrified my family, who would huddle together and weep bitterly.

We sought medical advice from numerous doctors, but they said, “This person is a lost cause; there’s no hope. Even if the legendary physician Hua Tuo were alive today, he couldn’t save her!”

Teetering on the Brink of Death

At the time, I had heard that qigong could cure illnesses, but I didn’t believe it. However, we were out of options, so my husband took me by bike to a qigong practitioner. I didn’t know what kind of qigong it was; the man simply made a few hand gestures, claiming he could treat my diseases.

The qigong master asked, “How old are you?” I was in such agony that I could not even remember my age. He dug his fingers into my shoulder and told me not to look at him, so I closed my eyes, wondering, “Why shouldn’t I look?” Then he pinched me so hard that the pain made me open my eyes, and I saw a fox with red lips and bright, yellowish eyes staring right at me. I thought to myself, “Am I seeing things?”

I had heard stories about fox spirits that could heal illnesses. At first, I thought, “That can’t be right; I must have imagined it.” But I decided to take another look—sure enough, it was a fox. I was terrified. I realized there really are fox spirits that treat the sick. I struggled to get up, stumbled outside, and collapsed as the man said, “All done, all done.”

I wasn’t cured, but just desperate to escape. I asked my husband to help me up and said, “That was a fox spirit!” Usually I am very confident, but I was trembling with fear.

My husband had planned for me to be treated first and then himself. He didn’t believe me, so I said, “I saw it with my own eyes.” He replied, “What should we do? We haven’t paid the man yet.”

He went in and told the man I did not want any further treatment. The man said, “Take this medicine. It’s imported. One small bottle costs 200 yuan.” Somehow he knew we had exactly 200 yuan with us. When I got home, I went back to bed, unable to move. The medicine didn’t help, and I was still in agony, so I just stopped taking it.

Back to Work Despite Illness

As we were barely getting by, I said to my husband, “You need to earn some money.” He replied, “I’m not in good health—would anyone even hire me?” He had trained as a bricklayer, and one of his junior apprentices was taking on jobs. I said, “Tell your junior apprentice to come over—I’ll talk to him.”

After he arrived, I said, “Look at the state your senior worker is in. I’m sick, too, and can’t work. Why don’t you take him with you to earn some money? Whatever they offer, just take it. He definitely can’t do heavy labor. Just let him do some simple work—if others earn five yuan a day, just give him two yuan. I can’t walk, and we have two very young children. If he doesn’t earn any money, what are we to do? How is our family supposed to survive?”

As I spoke, tears of sadness streamed down my face. Seeing how pitiful I looked, he said, “I’ll take him to work with me.”

My husband said, “If I leave, what will you do?”

I replied, “I’m not afraid. I’ll just do what needs to be done—I’ll learn Falun Gong from my mother-in-law.”

Seeing a Spinning Falun

I only told my husband I would learn Falun Gong to put his mind at ease, so he could leave without worrying. At the time, both my in-laws were practicing Falun Gong, and my mother-in-law often told me, “If you practice Falun Gong, you won’t get sick.”

I thought to myself, “If no one got sick, what would be the point of hospitals?” It all sounded too far-fetched to me, and I didn’t believe it at all. So, after my husband left, I never actually took it up.

Once my husband went away for work, I didn’t sleep for a single night because if I lay down, I couldn’t get back up again. My husband used to help me up, and as my children were still young, they couldn’t help me either. When I needed to use the bathroom, I couldn’t get there on my own, and I had to hold onto the wall and move little by little.

At that time, my daughter was eight years old. She cooked meals for herself and her younger brother, but I hardly ever ate. My son was only four. He didn’t wander far when he played and would come back after a little while, saying, “Mom, are you going to the bathroom?”

Children at that age are supposed to be carefree and having fun, but in our family, the older one had to go to school and do the cooking, and the younger one had to worry about his mother’s bathroom needs—they were both suffering, too.

One day in late July 1997, my son said, “Mom, you should practice Falun Gong. It’s helped other people get better, so it can help you get better, too.”

I replied, “Mm-hmm.” Actually, I was just trying to make him happy.

When he heard me agree, he immediately climbed onto the bed, crossed his legs in the full lotus position, formed a hand sign, and said, “Mom, let me show you how to do this.”

I just kept saying “Mm-hmm” to keep him entertained.

My son had me sit up and lean against the wall, so I just went along with what he said. Since I didn’t know how to sit in the full lotus position, I sat in the half-lotus position instead. He also taught me to press my tongue against the roof of my mouth and close my eyes. Seeing how earnest he was, I felt grateful and thought to myself, “He must have learned this from his grandmother.”

I closed my eyes, and after a moment, I saw something spinning—a circular disk with a bright light inside. Beneath the light were things that looked like little fish, with one end larger than the other; some were spinning one way, and others the other way. There were also rotating yellow flowers, with a large yellow flower in the center. What on earth were they? This lasted for about 10 minutes, and I was absolutely amazed.

I wanted to find a Falun Gong practitioner to ask what I had seen. It had just rained that day, and the road was slippery, so I slowly made my way along, holding onto the wall for support. To my surprise, I made it to the house of a lady who practices Falun Gong. She was chatting with another practitioner about an amazing dream she’d had. I said, “I also have something to share, but it wasn’t a dream.” I told them what I had seen.

Her husband overheard and said, “What did it look like?” So I made hand gestures to show him. He then took out a copy of Zhuan Falun and asked, “Was it this Falun (law wheel)?”

I looked at the cover plate and said, “Is this the Falun? It looked very similar. Yours is so clear! Mine didn’t look quite as real.”

The husband said, “You have a good foundation. Come practice with us.”

I replied, “I’ll practice, I’ll practice.”

He gave me a copy of Falun Gong, but when I saw how small the print was, I set it aside, saying, “The print is so small, I can’t read it. I’m not educated—I don’t even recognize all the characters.”

He said, “I’ll find you one with larger print,” and brought me a copy of Zhuan Falun (Volume II).

I opened it up. On the first page, Master said:

“The vastness of the universe and the enormity of the cosmic bodies can never be understood by humans through exploration; the minuteness of matter can never be detected by humans. The human body is so mysterious that it is beyond human knowledge, which can merely scratch the surface. Life is so abundant and complex that it will forever remain an eternal enigma to mankind.” (“Firmament,” Essentials for Further Advancement)

Actually, I didn’t recognize many characters, but somehow when I saw them, I just knew what they meant.

Back when I became unwell, I wondered why people get sick. Our heads are so small—how can they contain such a wide range of thoughts? I have a younger sister whose home isn’t very clean, yet she never gets sick. My home is cleaner than hers; why does my family get sick? What’s going on? We don’t even understand the human body, yet Master can explain the universe so clearly—this is truly remarkable.

I turned the page, and there it was: “True Cultivation.” The very first sentence read: “My truly cultivating disciples, what I have taught you is a Fa with which one may cultivate Buddhahood or the Dao.” My mind lit up, and I realized this is the method for cultivating the Buddha Fa and the Dao. I had to learn it.

I took the book home and finished reading it in one night; I even forgot about the pain I was feeling. The next day, I told my daughter, “I need to learn Falun Gong, but there are many characters I don’t recognize.”

She said, “Just copy the characters you don’t know on a piece of paper, and I’ll look them up in the dictionary for you when I get back.”

All Illnesses Disappear After Three Days

Finishing Zhuan Falun (Volume II) further strengthened my confidence in practicing the exercises. Afterward, I obtained a copy of The Great Way of Spiritual Perfection and learned the movements from the book. I couldn’t go to the practice site because I couldn’t walk or stand on my own.

When I looked at the movements for the first exercise, I just couldn’t figure them out. They seemed difficult. The second exercise looked a little simpler, so I decided to learn that one first. I leaned against the bed in a half-sitting, half-reclining position. I started with the “Holding the Wheel” posture, mastering one movement at a time, before moving onto the next one. I practiced as I learned, taking short breaks whenever I got tired.

After completing the “Holding the Wheel” exercise in all four positions, I was sweating—my clothes were soaked. I hadn’t sweated for nearly three years since I fell ill, even during the hottest days of summer, I still had to wear a cotton-padded jacket. That day, I broke a sweat while practicing—how amazing! After finishing the practice, I felt tired, so I lay down and fell asleep. My insomnia was completely cured. The next day, I practiced a little longer.

On the third day, I practiced in front of the mirror to do the movements correctly. As I practiced, however, interference arose. I remembered Master saying that when interference happens, one should call out Master’s name.

That entity tried several tricks to try to disturb me. At one point, it said, “Stop practicing Falun Gong. You’ll turn into a stone Buddha and won’t be able to do anything.”

I replied, “That would be perfect—impervious to wind, rain, and the scorching sun.”

Then that thing said, “Stop practicing. If you quit, I’ll give you a huge amount of money.” It produced a large quantity of red 100-yuan notes, stacked as high as a mountain.

I said, “What do I need money for? If my health is poor, what use is money? I’m certainly not listening to you!”

Although this dialogue was taking place in my mind, I knew those voices were not me. There seemed to be several of them. One said, “If you keep practicing, I’ll stab you to death with a pitchfork.” I saw that pitchfork in another dimension, but I wasn’t afraid.

I assumed that everyone’s experience was the same and that seeing things (such as phenomena from other dimensions) was perfectly normal. Since I had been able to see such things from the very beginning, I hadn’t given it much thought.

When I reached the position of holding the wheel above my head, an old man with a white beard appeared, carrying a horsetail whisk. He looked at me and remarked, “Not bad,” before walking away.

I wondered, “What did that mean? Could this be a test?”

Later, I drank some cold water and suddenly remembered it was bad for me. Only then did I realize I’d already drunk it three times, and my stomach didn’t hurt at all. That’s when I really noticed how healthy I felt: Oh! I was standing up, I could walk, I didn’t hurt at all—everything was better! I was so happy that I immediately cleaned the house until it was spotless and ran outside.

I shouted excitedly, “I practice Falun Gong! My illnesses are gone! I’m healed!”

When the villagers heard this, they said, “Falun Gong is truly miraculous! Someone who was bedridden and paralyzed is up and running after just three days.”

This good news quickly spread throughout the nearby villages. People learned about Falun Gong’s miraculous effects and flocked to practice sites to learn the exercises.

A remarkable thing happened while I was learning the meditation. I tried different ways of crossing my legs—nothing seemed to work. In my heart, I said, “Master, I’m not doing it right.”

Then Master appeared, wearing a yellow kasaya, sitting right across from me, and said, “You’re doing it wrong. Go find so-and-so.”

I went into the village and asked, “Is there someone named so-and-so here?”

A villager replied, “Yes, what do you want with him?”

I said, “I want to practice Falun Gong with him.” It turned out his wife practiced Falun Gong, and they had a practice site at their home.

I went to their home the next day to learn the meditation. I did well with the first four exercises and learned the meditation with them.

When I was meditating, no matter how much my legs hurt, I did not take them down. A voice called out my name, saying, “Please get up—it’s killing me.”

I replied, “It’s killing you? It’s you who’s in pain.” At first, I didn’t know what it was, but after studying Master’s teachings, I realized that it was karma.

Feeling that I had come to the practice relatively late, I did the exercises as much as I could every day—sometimes two or three times. I wanted a copy of Zhuan Falun but had no money. A fellow practitioner said, “Here is a book. Another practitioner has already paid part of the cost, so you only need to pay four yuan.”

Yet, I didn’t even have four yuan. I found someone who knitted sweaters and asked to learn the craft. I said, “Please lend me four yuan first, and I will work here knitting sweaters for you.” She agreed and gave me five yuan. That is how I got a copy of Zhuan Falun.

After I got the book, whenever I opened it to read, every character gleamed with a brilliant golden light. At first, I would see the srivatsa symbol, followed by a spinning Falun. If I encountered a character I didn’t recognize, it would spin, and I would suddenly understand its meaning. Later, the characters would occasionally enlarge, and at times, I could see layers upon layers of Master’s Fashen (law bodies) behind them. I truly cherished Zhuan Falun as an invaluable treasure.

Protected by Master

After reading Zhuan Falun, I was reminded of many things from my childhood. As a child, I loved telling people stories—talking about how many people there were underground and in the heavens, where they came from, and so on. I didn’t know how I knew these things, I just did.

I could even fly when I was little. With a single leap, I could soar quite high—as high as the middle of a tree. Another leap would take me up to the treetops. By the time I was 13 or 14, however, I'd lost the ability. Sometimes, when I went out to play, I felt as though the plants were waving at me.

The more I studied the Fa, the more I felt a deep, predestined connection with Master. I believe Master was already looking after me even before I began practicing the exercises; otherwise, I would have died long ago.

When I was 14, my mother cursed me with such vile language that I couldn’t bear it and didn’t want to go on living. I thought, “If I’m going to die, I might as well die with a full stomach.” Usually, I wouldn’t fight for food. I waited until they finished eating before I ate. But that day, I pushed to the front and ate until I was very full.

I thought to myself, “One packet of rat poison won’t kill me,” so I drank two packets. After drinking them, I lay down to wait for death. A moment later, my whole body went numb, and I felt like I was going to throw up. Afraid my mother would find out, I ran outside to throw up. A little chick came over to eat my vomit and died shortly afterward, and I knew the poison was really potent.”

I buried the vomit in the dirt as I continued to retch. As the chick died, its body trembled, and my body began to tremble, too. After I finished vomiting, I didn’t die, I just felt numb all over. I lay there for two weeks and then recovered.

I was in deep agony and didn’t want to live anymore, yet I couldn’t even manage to die. Others died after taking just one packet, but I took two and still didn’t die. Although I survived, I gradually developed stomach troubles—I couldn’t drink cold water, as it would trigger stomach pain that would drag on for months. I believe Master didn’t let me die because I was meant to obtain Dafa.

When my husband returned, I told him, “I’m healed.” When he left, my back had been covered in malignant tumors that had spread everywhere. The doctors had said, “There’s nothing more we can do; just go home and eat and drink well”—essentially telling me to wait for death.

He knew there had been four particularly large tumors on my back. When he touched the area and found them gone, he exclaimed in astonishment, “Oh my, you really are healed!” All that remained was a patch of hardened skin, like a scar.

Seeing that my health improved through practicing, my husband began to practice as well. He said, “I will never do bad things again; I want to learn to be a good person.” His health improved, though he would occasionally cough up substances resembling blood or rotten meat. This went on for several years, yet he could work just as energetically as a young person.

After I recovered my health, I went to the practice site to do the exercises. After about a month of practicing, while doing the second exercise, I suddenly had an urgent need to use the restroom. When I looked, I saw lots of large clumps of pus, resembling black strips of cloth, and also white clumps of pus! My husband also passed a lot of white pus clumps, and shortly after, he was back to normal.

At the time, my daughter was only nine, and my son was five. When they saw how much better I was, they both started practicing with me. When I watched Master’s video lectures, they watched, too. When I went to the practice site, they came along, too.

As we studied the Fa, my daughter read along with me. Later, when we began memorizing On Dafa, I couldn’t do it, but my son managed to, even though he hadn’t started school yet.

My daughter said, “I have been able to see Master’s law body for a long time. At school, when I did something good, Master would smile; when I did something not so good, Master would look serious.” That was when I realized my daughter’s celestial eye had opened, too. Later, she wrote an article about her cultivation and participated in a local experience-sharing conference.

In 1998, my son was just six years old. It was wheat harvesting time, and we had almost finished. The remaining wheat was too much for one truckload but not quite enough for two, so my husband said, “Let’s just take one truckload.”

On the way home, there was an uphill stretch. He was driving too fast, and the truck started to tip over. My son was supposed to sit in the passenger seat to steady the cart, but he was too light to keep it from tipping. The cart overturned, landing on its wheels, and my son was pinned underneath it. Hot water spilled all over his back.

After we got my son out, I was terrified to see that his entire back was covered in large blisters—what were we to do in such sweltering weather? My son said, “It’s fine; Master is looking after me.” My mother-in-law suggested, “We should take him to the hospital.” My son replied, “There’s no need. It’s nothing.”

I had him lie face-down on the bed and turned on the electric fan. I also fanned him by hand, but eventually, I grew tired and fell asleep. When I woke up, I heard my son playing outside, running and jumping around. I said, “Son, are you better?” He replied, “I’m better—truly better.” I said, “Come here, let me take a look.” When I checked, he was indeed fully recovered; his back was smooth, with not a single blister left!

At that time, although we still faced financial hardships, our health had improved, and our spirits were high. We were joyful every day, bathed in the compassion of Dafa.
