(Minghui.org) I started to practice Falun Dafa in 1997, and have since followed the teachings of Master Li (founder of the practice) to be a better person. However, the decades-long grievances and feuds I had with four people continued.
They include a couple who hated me, a subordinate I could not forgive, and a person I always felt sorry for. Fortunately, Master Li gave me the compassion, wisdom, and courage to reconcile these.
Knocked on the Wrong Door
I used to work for a large company in the provincial capital city in the 1980s. My company had a large outdoor swimming pool which attracted many people every summer. One couple, Gan and his wife Kang, volunteered to manage the pool. But the contract fee they paid the company each year could not even cover our water and utility bills. Seeing that the couple could potentially make a fortune with the company asset, other employees complained a lot.
Six years after the couple began managing the pool, I was assigned a leadership position. Based on strong opinions of employees, I planned to take the pool back and let the workers’ union manage it for one year. This way, we could find out how much revenue it generated per year, and we could come up with a reasonable contractual plan. However, the couple somehow learned of my plan and Gan argued with me. The company’s top leader intervened, my plan was dismissed, and there was nothing I could do.
One year later, the couple gave up managing the pool due to pressure from public opinion, but they harbored deep hatred against me. Since then, although we nodded and said hello when we met, the deep resentment and complaints were still there.
After I began practicing Falun Dafa in 1997, I learned to be compassionate and forgiving. Master said:
“Think about it: Buddhas and Gods—those magnificent enlightened beings—would they get angry with humans? Absolutely not. That’s because they are not at the level of humans and don’t have emotion (qing) as do everyday people. How could they position themselves among everyday people? When you deal with conflicts the same way as everyday people, you are then at the same level, or in the same realm, as everyday people. That is to say, you are one of the everyday people. Only when you are not like them are you not one of them. Of course then, what you will display will be tolerance and an immense capacity to forgive. Everyday people will see it this way, but in fact it is the manifestation of your xinxing level in cultivation. So, regardless of the setting or circumstances in which you run into problems, you must maintain a compassionate and merciful heart in handling everything. If you cannot love your enemy, then you cannot reach Consummation.” (“Teachings at the Conference in Australia”)
Master’s teachings made me realize that if my resentment towards Gan and Kang continued after so many years, then I was essentially an everyday person. In fact, they weren’t bad people. After retiring, Kang was still the conductor of the senior citizens’ choir at her workplace. She was very enthusiastic, so everyone called her “Teacher Kang.” Why couldn’t I forgive them? When Dafa was suppressed and I was persecuted, they didn’t kick me when I was down; they even expressed sympathy for me. Then don’t they also have a predestined connection with Dafa?
When I no longer harbored resentment towards the couple, I often thought about clarifying the truth about Dafa to them, but I was always hindered by various human notions, such as, “Would they understand me?” I also made excuses for myself by saying, “Let’s wait and see.” More than ten years passed.
One spring evening in 2013, I was carrying a Shen Yun DVD, intending to tell a colleague who lived on the third floor of a residential building about Dafa. When I excitedly knocked on the door, Kang opened it. I immediately realized I had missed a floor and knocked on the wrong door. I wasn’t flustered; I smiled and said, “Hello, Teacher Kang! I know you enjoy song and dance, so I brought you a DVD of the world’s number one show.” She greeted me with a beaming smile, calling me by my former official title, and said, “Thank you.” While inviting me in, she loudly called out Gang's name to let him know I had arrived. From their overjoyed expression, I saw they were moved by my surprise visit.
I started by talking about Shen Yun, which led into the main topic of our conversation. Suddenly, Gang interjected, “I’ve told them [the people around him] many times that anyone who says anything bad about Falun Dafa is definitely not a good person!”
I was taken aback and looked at him in surprise. He said, “You wouldn’t believe it, would you? My wife and I have been Catholics for a long time; we both have faith. The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) suppression of Falun Dafa is utterly absurd!” I then understood why they had expressed sympathy for me when I was persecuted.
I told them about the April 25th peaceful appeal in 1999, the staged Tiananmen self-immolation hoax, how Falun Dafa is practiced worldwide, and the massive wave of withdrawals from the CCP and its affiliated organizations. They listened attentively as we discussed it. Although they didn’t agree to withdraw from the CCP at the time, they understood the truth, embraced Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and believed in the goodness of Falun Dafa. I was happy that they found their place in the future. After we chatted for almost an hour, I got up to leave, and they politely saw me to the door.
I was deeply moved by the miraculous scene that had just unfolded because I went to the wrong door and knocked on it. Thinking back on how calm and composed I was in the face of this unexpected turn of events, and how naturally and appropriately I explained my purpose—wasn’t that precisely the ability and wisdom bestowed upon me by Master? In just a few minutes of conversation, not only did they understand the truth, but our resentment of over ten years instantly melted away. Wasn’t all of this a skillful arrangement made by our compassionate Master, who saw that while I had the sincerity to resolve our grievances, I lacked the courage to take the initiative to reconcile? Thank you, Master.
Invited In
I have a subordinate, Niu, who is skilled in calligraphy and treated me with great respect, so I value him highly—in fact, I favored him. During a personnel reshuffle, I overruled objections and saved Niu’s position, for which he was extremely grateful. After that, he once said to me, “My father told me to always remember your kindness and never forget it!” I never imagined he would turn against me.
When Falun Dafa was suppressed and I was persecuted, Niu unexpectedly became the first person to sever ties with me. He not only stopped contacting me, he also treated me like a complete stranger when we met on the street. What I found most intolerable was his public attack on me.
One morning, my wife and I were having breakfast at a long table in the morning market. Suddenly, we saw Niu and his wife also come in to eat. Instead of sitting at other tables, they came straight to ours, sitting opposite us. We were less than fifty centimeters apart, but Niu completely ignored us. He didn’t even look up, finished his meal in silence, and left. My wife muttered angrily, “Snobbish people!”
I understood that Niu’s disdain for me was both a declaration of his complete break with me, a “stubborn Falun Dafa member,” and a public humiliation. The harm he inflicted on me in this way was no less than slapping me twice in public. I deeply regretted how I had misjudged him; I never imagined he would be so ungrateful. Why did I have to encounter such a person in my life?
Later, through Master’s teachings, I understood that none of this was without reason. Wasn’t Niu’s behavior helping me improve my character? Wasn’t my past favoritism towards him and my current resentment towards him forms of attachment? Weren’t his past respect and flattery towards me and his current disdain for me helping me expose my attachment to fame, my desire for praise, my need to maintain dignity, my love of face, and my vanity? Recalling Master’s teachings on “You have gained four ways in one shot,” (Lecture Four, Zhuan Falun) I understood many things, felt much lighter, and my resentment towards Niu diminished. However, I still couldn’t truly express gratitude to him. I understood that my level of understanding wasn’t yet high enough to completely forgive him; I still had many attachments.
Later, Niu won a gold medal in a national calligraphy competition, and he instantly become a renowned calligrapher. My first thought upon hearing the news was, “Wow, now he’s riding high, completely arrogant.” But upon reflection, I realized that I wasn’t happy for him; instead I felt resentment and even jealousy. How could I harbor such intense jealousy? I felt deeply ashamed. I told myself that I must rid myself of it.
One day in 2017, Niu suddenly came to my house. His face was flushed, and he stammered as he explained his purpose. He wanted to bring my son a picture book introducing him (Niu) and two valuable calligraphy works. He asked me to pass them on. After saying this, he turned and left. His hasty departure surprised me again, but I immediately realized that he wasn’t really bringing things to my son; he was apologizing to me in this way. I thought that after all these years, perhaps he had a change of heart or understood something. For him to come and apologize today, I wonder how much determination and courage it took... It was truly admirable.
Thinking about it, Niu’s life has been very difficult, especially since he was put in such an awkward position and had to endure so much criticism in order to help me cultivate. I really have to thank him. He is also an important predestined person to me. At that moment, my resentment disappeared, and my only thought was that he is also a life that deserves to be saved by Dafa. I should have gone to tell the couple the truth right away. But considering that he is already a favorite of the CCP, I decided to wait and be cautious. Actually, I was still afraid at the time.
One day in early 2025, I went to a residential building looking for someone. As I was pressing the keypad on the security door entrance of the building, Niu suddenly opened the door. When he saw it was me, he immediately said happily, “Old leader, it’s you! My home is on the first floor, please come in!” I understood that today’s chance encounter was arranged by Master.
The couple was very excited about my visit. They knew I had forgiven them and quickly poured tea and served fruit. As soon as we sat down, Niu said, “You’ve suffered so much these past 20 years! It’s all that old bastard Jiang Zemin’s fault.” (Jiang was the former CCP leader who started the persecution of Falun Dafa in 1999).
Before I could say anything, he launched into a tirade of insults against Jiang, calling him a “toad spirit,” a “big traitor, and a “national sellout.” He continued, “Look what he’s done to the country! Even after he died, he’s still being lauded so highly, called this and that expert, and a military strategist?! Was he even a soldier? Did he even know how to shoot a gun?”
I replied, “His greatest crime was persecuting Falun Dafa.”
Niu said, “I know that. At the time, the other members of the Politburo’s Standing Committee disagreed with the suppression.” It seemed he knew a lot. I suddenly understood why he had come to apologize to me years ago: he had probably read the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party or heard the truth.
After I told them about the April 25th petition and the staged self-immolation hoax, I took out a photo of the “hidden character stone.” Niu read the words “The Chinese Communist Party will perish” and said, “This is the will of Heaven!” I then helped them withdraw from the CCP organizations and gave them amulets which had information about Falun Dafa.
Niu saw me off quite a distance from the building entrance. The grudge of over 20 years had finally been resolved, and we were both very relieved.
Taking the Initiative to Visit
Before I retired, I was director of the Technical Title Review Committee in my workplace. During a title review vote, Liang, a teacher from the affiliated middle school who should have been promoted to a higher professional title, was not selected. She cried bitterly and even complained to the disciplinary committee. Afterward, she stopped speaking to me. As the director of the review committee I knew the result was unfair and it should have been revisited, but fearing it would hurt another acquaintance, so I let it go. When I later thought about the negative impact this had on Liang I felt deeply ashamed. She not only didn’t get a raise, she also lost face in front of her colleagues, students, and relatives. She was widely recognized as a modest person in the workplace. For many years, I felt guilty for wronging and hurting her.
After I was persecuted, although she didn’t gloat, Liang ignored me. I understood that if I couldn’t get her to forgive me, she would find it difficult to accept me telling her the truth. So, I kept looking for an opportunity to apologize to her. However, whenever I met her and her husband, her husband would politely exchange a few words with me, but she would either turn her back on me or walk away. Thus, the apology was repeatedly postponed.
I thought about how Master has always been by my side protecting me, and resolving countless historic grievances (from previous lifetimes). To help me resolve the two conflicts that have been troubling me in this life (as mentioned above), Master arranged for me to go to his door to resolve them. Master has gone to great lengths for me. I thought that this time, I could no longer let Master worry and trouble me, nor could I passively go to the door again. I needed to let go of my human notions and openly and honestly take the initiative to apologize to Liang.
One day in early summer this year, I arrived at Liang’s door. There was no elevator, so I held onto the stair railing and climbed the stairs one step at a time to the seventh floor, then knocked on her door.
Liang opened the door and, seeing it was me, coldly asked, “Who are you looking for?” I smiled and said, “I’m looking for you!”
“What do you want?” she asked. “To apologize,” I replied.
Her husband, hearing it was me, quickly invited me inside.
After we sat down, I recounted how I had hurt her 30 years ago because of the promotion evaluation. Then I solemnly apologized to her, and asking for her forgiveness. She became a little agitated and embarrassed, and said, “Oh. It happened thirty years ago, and you still hold it in your heart... It’s all my fault.”
She continued, “Actually, although I resented you a little at the time, I didn’t hate you, because you didn’t want to hurt me; it was so-and-so (my former boss) who wanted to hurt me.”
I looked at her in surprise, and she recounted the grudges she had against the former boss and his family more than 40 years prior when she first joined the company and they lived next door in a tenement building. Then she said, “To get revenge on me, he (her former boss) lobbied the judges before the promotion evaluation. Now he’s passed away, and I don’t hold a grudge against him anymore.”
I said, “As the chairman of the evaluation committee, I had my own selfish motives at the time, and I failed to rectify the injustice done to you; I bear responsibility.”
“You only had one vote, and you couldn’t influence the other judges,” she smiled and said, “Forget it, let’s not mention it again.”
Hearing her forgive me, I felt a great weight lifted from my shoulders. The couple also smiled.
Then I told them, “I have something even more important to tell you today…”
“What is it?” they asked eagerly.
I said, “It’s something that concerns one’s fate.” I then explained the truth about Falun Dafa and the importance of quitting the CCP. They were very excited and happily withdrew from the CCP organizations, and accepted a Falun Dafa amulet.
As I left they repeatedly said “Thank you.” As a Falun Dafa practitioner, I feel extremely gratified by this outcome. I understand their feelings and thoughts. An over-80-year-old former leader came to apologize to his former subordinates for a grudge from 30 years prior and also shared the good news with them.
The above article recounts how I resolved my grievances and clarified the truth. From mistakenly knocking on the door to being invited in and then taking the initiative to apologize, I’ve written about how I gradually cultivated my character. My experiences and how my character improved also reflects my understanding of Master’s teachings and my gratitude for his compassionate arrangements.
