A farmer in Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province, was abused and developed pancreatic cancer while serving a five-year term for her faith in Falun Gong. The prison authorities denied her medical parole. Ms. Xie Baofeng never recovered after she was released on September 29, 2021. She died on February 10, 2026, at the age of 65.
Ms. Xie’s husband died on the day of her prison release. Her mother-in-law, worried about Ms. Xie’s safety, passed away while she was in prison.
Prior to her latest prison sentence, Ms. Xie served two years of forced labor (October 1999 – October 2001) and ten years in prison (April 2004 – April 2014) for not renouncing her faith. During her first jail term, she was forced to do hard labor without pay for more than 10 hours a day. Her fingers became deformed from doing the heavy labor. She was deprived of sleep, starved, and forced to squat for long hours when she wasn’t doing forced labor. A guard once grabbed her hair and slammed her head against a heater. Ms. Xie became emaciated and suffered from edema.
See the related reports for Ms. Xie’s repeated persecution. Below is additional information that has emerged regarding her latest incarceration.
Denied Parole Despite Critical Condition
Ms. Xie was last arrested on September 30, 2016, and was sentenced to five years following a court hearing on April 27, 2017. She was admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on December 5, 2017.
In the first few months of her imprisonment, Ms. Xie often experienced pain in her stomach and abdomen. She was not rendered timely treatments, which caused her condition to worsen. For a long period of time, she would vomit everything she ate. Despite her condition, the guards still forced her to do hard labor. Around June 2019, Ms. Xie suddenly experienced sharp pain and sweated profusely. Only then did the guards take her to the prison hospital.
Ms. Xie fell into a coma at the prison hospital and was rushed to the ICU of the 739 Hospital in Shenyang. The doctors there diagnosed her with pancreatic cancer. She remained unconscious for over 20 days and was issued a critical condition notice.
Her family implored the doctors to not give up on Ms. Xie, and they finally performed surgery. After she regained consciousness, the guards transferred her back to the prison hospital. Her conditions worsened and she fell into a coma again.
The guards rushed Ms. Xie to the outside hospital but took her back to the prison hospital as soon as she was resuscitated. She remained weak and unable to eat. Tang Yan, the head of the Fourth Division, promised to release her as soon as she signed a statement to renounce Falun Gong. She refused, and the prison denied her family’s repeated requests for medical parole.
Ms. Xie had difficulty walking due to the cancer, and she became wheelchair-bound. Team lead Shi Furong often abused her and still forced her to do hard labor. After they returned from the workshop every night, Ms. Xie was forced to sit, immobile, on a small stool until bedtime. Sundays were days off, but she was not allowed to rest in bed. Instead, she was made to sit on the small stool again.
Ms. Xie was released on September 29, 2021. Her husband died that day. As their son works out of town, she struggled to take care of herself. She died on February 10, 2026.
