(Minghui.org) A 70-year-old man in Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, completed a 3.5-year prison term in Shandong Province on December 24, 2025. His monthly pension was subsequently reduced from 4,000 to 1,000 yuan.

Mr. Chen Yongqing, born in September 1955, was arrested in early 2022 (exact time unknown), by police from Shandong Province. They targeted him after discovering that he had posted an article written by the founder of Falun Gong on a social media platform.

Falun Gong is a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

The police brought Mr. Chen to Shandong, and his family posted a 5,000 yuan bond to have him released on bail.

In June 2022, an officer surnamed Shi in Shandong called Mr. Chen and ordered him to report to them. Shi threatened to put him on the wanted list if he didn’t show up. He went and was arrested on arrival. His family then received a notice from the Zhoucun District Police Department in Zibo City, Shandong Province. Dated June 26, 2022, the notice stated that Mr. Chen was put on house surveillance at a designated location (which was never disclosed to his family).

Mr. Chen, who has a bachelor’s degree and once worked as a teacher, was later sentenced to three and a half years for “using a cult to undermine law enforcement,” the standard pretext used to sentence Falun Gong practitioners by the Chinese courts.

While serving time at the Shandong Province Prison, Mr. Chen was monitored around the clock by the inmates. He was forced to sit on a small bench for long hours, and only allowed three to four hours of sleep every night. He was also barred from taking showers or purchasing daily necessities.

The guards instructed two inmates to beat Mr. Chen, causing his left leg and arm to become extremely swollen. As his right hand and right leg had long become disabled after a car accident in 1997, the additional injuries on his left side of the body from the beatings made him unable to walk for over six months.

Two people from the Beizhan Judicial Bureau and Beizhan Police Station in Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, picked Mr. Chen up from the prison on December 24, 2025, when his term ended.

Mr. Chen previously served another three-year term, also for practicing Falun Gong. He was arrested together with his wife, Ms. Zhao Peng, on December 11, 2012. Both of them were sentenced to three years in late December 2012. His wife was allowed to serve time at home, and he was admitted to the Nanchang Prison in June 2013. His school fired him after the sentencing. Their school-age daughter struggled to pay tuition. She was also not allowed to visit him in prison.

Mr. Chen was forced to do hard labor and put in solitary confinement despite his disability. He was released in December 2015.
