A 79-year-old man in Yongning County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, died on October 13, 2025, after suffering years of persecution for practicing Falun Gong.
Mr. Wang Shihe, who retired from the Yongning County Food Bureau, took up Falun Gong in June 1997. His wife, Ms. Cao Guilan, soon joined him. After the communist regime launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999, the couple held firm to their faith and they were repeatedly targeted.
They went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in October 2000 and were arrested. After being escorted back to Ningxia, Mr. Wang was held at the Yongning County Detention Center for over eight months. His wife was given two years at the Ningxia Women’s Labor Camp.
Ms. Cao was arrested again in 2005 and sentenced to four years in prison.
Officer Bao Jinning and over ten others from the Yongning County Domestic Security Office broke into Ms. Cao’s home on June 16, 2016, and arrested her and her husband. The couple was suspected of putting up banners bearing Falun Gong messages along local roads. At least ten other local Falun Gong practitioners were also arrested around the same time.
Ms. Cao and Mr. Wang refused to answer questions during the interrogation. Ms. Cao was released on bail the next day. Mr. Wang was found to have a severe heart condition two days later and released after posting a 1,000-yuan bail.
The couple was taken back into custody in early September 2016. Mr. Wang was released on bail on September 5, but Ms. Cao remained in detention. She was later sentenced to three years and admitted to the Ningxia Women’s Prison.
The police harassed Mr. Wang at home on April 19, 2017. After his wife was released, they faced continued harassment, especially around politically sensitive dates.
Mr. Wang’s health declined as a result. He had three stents installed in his heart. He had gastrointestinal bleeding in 2025, and died on October 13 that year.
