Belated News: Xinjiang Woman Dies Shortly After Being Released in Critical Condition While Serving a 6-Year Prison Term for Her Faith

Ms. Wang Cuilan was released in critical condition on August 2022 while serving a six-year prison term for her faith in Falun Gong. The Urumqi City, Xinjiang Province, resident died in less than two weeks.

Ms. Wang, in her 60s, was arrested in September 2017 while distributing Falun Gong informational materials. The arresting officers from the Xinshi District Police Department put her in the Urumqi Third Detention Center. She was later sentenced to six years and admitted to the Xinjiang Province Women’s Prison, which is notorious for torturing jailed Falun Gong practitioners. Ms. Zhao Shuyuan, a 52-year-old engineer from Karamay, Xinjiang, died 83 days after she was admitted to the prison in May 2016.

Ms. Wang took up Falun Gong in 2014 and was in very good health before her arrest. It is unclear what torture she suffered in the prison that might have resulted in her critical condition. The prison authorities feared that she would die in their custody and released her in August 2022. She died shortly afterwards.
