(Minghui.org) A 59-year-old resident of Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province was released on January 17, 2026, after being incarcerated for 515 days in Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Tian Haiying was arrested on August 20, 2024, and sentenced to 1.5 years on December 25, 2024. She appealed the sentence but the original verdict was upheld, and she was sent to the prison on June 5, 2025. The following is an account of her torture.
Arrested for Distributing Falun Gong Materials
Ms. Tian was reported to the police and arrested when she was distributing computer disks containing information about Falun Gong on August 20, 2024.
She was taken to the hospital the next day for a physical exam and was found to have a systolic blood pressure reading of 220 mmHg (normal range is 120 or lower). She was therefore denied admission to the local detention center. The police refused to release Ms. Tian and took her to a police-managed ward in the Jiujiang City First Hospital.
Six tubes of blood were drawn from Ms. Tian, and she was monitored around the clock via a surveillance camera. She refused to have her blood pressure taken, take the medicine, or wear the patient uniform. She went on a hunger strike for 15 days.
Tortured by Detention Center and Hospital
The police and chief of the detention center issued Ms. Tian with criminal detention on September 5, 2024. She was taken to Jiujiang City Detention Center.
All detainees in the detention center were forced to watch videos showing the Red Army fighting. To stop the propaganda films from being played, Ms. Tian pressed the alarm. When the chief, doctor, and guards came, they forcibly took her blood pressure, which was at 230 mmHg. The guard put shackles on Ms. Tian’s legs, which caused her pain when she walked. The detention center wanted to send her to the hospital again but the hospital refused to admit her due to her high blood pressure. When Ms. Tian requested to be released, the chief said that they must follow the formalities, and rejected her request. She was later sent to the hospital.
Ms. Tian was held at the hospital for about a month. During this time, she refused to have her blood pressure measured, take the medicine, or wear the patient uniform. The police handcuffed Ms. Tian to a tiger bench torture device and forced the medicine into her mouth. Another time, they mixed the medicine in her food. A police officer even threatened her, “If you disobey, I have ways to get you, and you won’t dare to report me to the management. You will only be able to beg for mercy. You won’t even know how you die!”
Ms. Tian was sent back to the detention center in November 2024 and continued to be held there.
515 Days of Incarceration
The Yongxiu County Court tried Ms. Tian at the detention center on December 25, 2024. Her family was not allowed to attend and Ms. Tian was not given a chance to speak during the trial.
The detention center again tried to take Ms. Tian’s blood pressure in February 2025, and they again sent her to the hospital when she refused.
Ms. Tian received her verdict in early March while at the hospital. She was sentenced to a 1.5-year prison term. She was handcuffed to the tiger bench again when she refused to cooperate in the hospital. She could only use one hand to write the appeal letter as her other hand was handcuffed.
She appealed to the Jiujiang City Intermediate Court, which ruled to uphold her original verdict in May 2025.
Ms. Tian was sent to Nanchang City Women’s Prison in June 2025. Using the excuse of searching her, the police stripped Ms. Tian naked and demanded that she jump ten times and also squat down. She refused.
Ms. Tian was transferred to the Nanhu branch of the prison in early July 2025. She was released on January 17, 2026, after being incarcerated for 515 days.
Past Persecution
This is not the first time that Ms. Tian, who once worked as a substitute teacher, was targeted for her faith. She was previously given four forced labor terms and served three of them for about six years (the other time she was denied admission to the local labor camp due to her high blood pressure). She also served another 3.5-year prison term. Additionally, she was detained multiple times at various other facilities.
Ms. Tian’s husband Gui Xunlu divorced her while she was held in a labor camp in 2006. He barred her from contacting their daughter, who later became a lecturer at a university in Beijing.
