(Minghui.org) Mr. Zhang Jun, 39, in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province, stood trial on September 10, 2026, because he practices Falun Gong. His lawyer entered a not guilty plea for him.
Mr. Zhang was arrested on May 7, 2026, after he was reported for talking to a military officer about Falun Gong. The Gaoping District Procuratorate issued a formal arrest warrant for him on May 13, 2026. He is currently held at the Jialing District Supervision Center.
Agents from the Gaoping District Domestic Security Office threatened to suspend Mr. Zhang’s parents’ low-income subsidy if they dared to hire a lawyer for him. His father became incapacitated after a car accident, and his mother suffers from chronic illnesses. Despite their own difficulties, the elderly couple still hired a lawyer to represent their son.
The hearing on September 10 started at 9:30 a.m. and ended around noon. None of Mr. Zhang’s family was allowed to attend. Plainclothes officers were seen patrolling outside the courthouse. Some local practitioners who came to support Mr. Zhang were arrested or threatened. Some had their photos taken and had their bags searched.
Mr. Zhang testified in his own defense. He said that he didn’t violate any law by practicing his faith or telling people about it.
His lawyer added that the prosecutor failed to demonstrate which law his client allegedly broke in telling people about Falun Gong or how his actions allegedly “undermined law enforcement,” as indicated in the indictment. The lawyer also questioned the legal basis for citing Mr. Zhang’s two prior prison sentences for distributing Falun Gong materials as “evidence” to sentence him again.
Mr. Zhang took up Falun Gong in 2010, amid the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing persecution of the spiritual discipline. He has previously served two prison terms totaling six and a half years (October 2014 – October 2018, and November 2019 – May 2022).
