36-Year-Old Hubei Woman Tried for Her Faith in Falun Gong

(Minghui.org) A 36-year-old woman in Wuhan City, Hubei Province was tried on August 26, 2026, for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

The prosecutor refused to dismiss police interrogation records that were collected using coercion, and the judge denied Ms. Zhang Huiqiong’s request to exhibit Falun Gong informational materials used as prosecution evidence against her.

Initial Arrest

Led by staffers from the Huacheng Jiayuan Residential Community, officers from East Lake High-Tech Development Zone Domestic Security Office and Huashan Police Station broke into Ms. Zhang’s home on December 21, 2021. They claimed that she had been recorded distributing informational materials about Falun Gong, and raided her home with a blank search warrant. Only officers Sun Fuli and Sun Jun, who led the home raid, produced their IDs. No other officers showed anything or revealed their names.

Ms. Zhang was first taken to the Huashan Police Station and then admitted to the Wuhan City First Lockup later in the evening. The police refused to inform her family of her arrest or provide any official notice regarding her 15-day administrative detention.

On January 7, 2022, officer Shu Tan and three others brought Ms. Zhang back to the Huashan Police Station and then took her to the Wuhan City First Detention Center for criminal detention. She was denied admission because she hadn't receive a COVID-19 vaccination.

The police called Ms. Zhang’s family, ordering them to come to the police station for her bail release. When they arrived, the police ordered them to persuade her to receive the vaccine shot. She refused to comply and was held at the police station overnight.

The police took Ms. Zhang to a local clinic the following day and attempted to force her to receive the shot. She still refused to cooperate. They made another attempt to detain her at the detention center in the afternoon. When the guards insisted that they would not admit Ms. Zhang, the police released her on bail.

To avoid further persecution, Ms. Zhang was forced to live away from home and was put on the wanted list online. Unable to find her, the local police and residential committee staffers kept harassing her family.

Starting in November 2023, Ms. Zhang’s father, Mr. Zhang Linhua, filed several complaints against the police for the persecution, but to no avail.

Indicted After Second Arrest

Ms. Zhang and her father were both arrested on November 7, 2025, by Xinzhou Police Station officers. While Mr. Zhang was released around midnight, Ms. Zhang was taken to the Wuhan City First Detention Center the next day. As the East Lake High-tech Development Zone Procuratorate didn’t approve her arrest, she was released on bail again on November 21.

On December 5, 2025, Mr. Zhang received two documents from the Xinzhou Police Station, indicating that the Falun Gong related items confiscated from Ms. Zhang in 2021 would be used as prosecution evidence against her.

Ms. Zhang was summoned to the East Lake High-tech Development Zone Procuratorate on March 30, 2026, and was issued a formal arrest warrant hours later. The police took her back into custody at the Wuhan City First Detention Center around noon.

On May 28, the Huasha Police Station officers submitted Ms. Zhang’s case to the East Lake High-tech Development Zone Procuratorate, which then transferred it to the Hongshan District Procuratorate on June 3.

Prosecutor Liu Jun deposed Ms. Zhang at the detention center on June 30. She pointed out the police violated legal procedure in handling her case and demanded Liu to re-investigate the evidence used in the case. He ignored her. She then questioned him on the legal basis for prosecuting her. He immediately ended the deposition and ordered the guards to put her back in a detention cell.

Ms. Zhang then wrote to the Hongshan District Court, demanding the judge to dismiss her case. She didn’t receive any response.

During the pre-hearing conference on August 18, Ms. Zhang refused to accept the court-appointed lawyer and insisted on testifying in her own defense.

Court Hearing

Ms. Zhang stood trial at the Hongshan District Court on August 26. The prosecutor refused to summon witnesses to appear in court for cross-examination.

Ms. Zhang demanded the exclusion of three police interrogation records from her trial. She said that she was forced to answer questions under coercion in the first two interrogation sessions, and that the police did not objectively record everything she said. The prosecutor denied her request, claiming that both records had her signature.

The third record, on the other hand, was completely fabricated. Her signature was forged by the police; and it was dated February 26, 2026, when she was arrested and taken to the detention center on March 30, 2026. The prosecutor initially claimed that the police had simply made a mistake when writing the date. However, he later agreed to exclude the record when Ms. Zhang stated that no one had ever informed her at the detention center that her arrest had been approved, as written in the interrogation record.

Ms. Zhang also demanded the prosecutor to play the video or audio recording of the police interrogation on January 7, 2022. The prosecutor claimed that they no longer had them, because the interrogation took place a long time ago.

Ms. Zhang next asked the prosecutor to read out loud the Falun Gong materials used as evidence against her, and explain how they could support the charge of “undermining law enforcement with a cult organization.” Judge Guo Chunzhi denied the request.
