(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Wang Guiqi has been unlawfully sentenced and incarcerated in the Binhai New District Prison in Tianjin since November 2013. His attorneys recently appealed the faulty verdict a second time, as it was unlawfully upheld when they appealed last year.
Mr. Wang was arrested on November 21, 2012, and secretly tried on March 21, 2013 in the Tanggu District Court. His attorneys received a notice of judgment on July 29, 2013 that stated Mr. Wang was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. His attorneys appealed to the Tianjin Second Intermediate Court on August 2, 2013, but the judge upheld the verdict.
Mr. Wang was then sent to the Binhai New District Prison where the guards severely tortured him in an attempt to “transform” him. The tortures seriously damaged his mental and physical condition and he became very thin and weak.
Mr. Wang’s attorneys went to the Binhai New District Prison in early April this year. They requested to see him but the prison officials denied their request.
The attorneys warned the officials that they had the legal right to meet with their client, Mr. Wang, and that they would sue the prison for abuse of power if their request was still denied unreasonably.
The officials were afraid of taking responsibility and told the attorneys to contact the Tianjin Prison Bureau, which is in charge of the Binhai New District Prison.
The attorneys went to the Tianjin Prison Bureau to submit their request. However, the bureau officials gave them the runaround. They showed the attorneys unrelated documents and regulations, and evasively replied that they were not responsible for Mr. Wang’s case. The attorneys refuted the excuses and demanded that their legal right to visit their client be met. The officials had nothing to say in response and forcibly kicked them out in the end.
The following day the attorneys went to the Tianjin Bureau of Justice, which is in charge of the Tianjin Prison Bureau. They filed charges against the prison bureau for their omission, but were again subjected to the officials’ attempts to obstruct them in every possible way.
The attorneys also filed a grievance appeal to the Tianjin Second Intermediate Court recently. The court has received their petition and told them to wait for further notice.
