(Minghui.org) A 66-year-old woman in Yinchuan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was taken to Ningxia Women’s Prison on June 22, 2021, to serve a four-year term for practicing Falun Gong, after her appeal was rejected by the Yinchuan City Intermediate Court.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Luo Xinping was arrested on August 18, 2020, after she was reported for talking to someone about Falun Gong. Both her own home and her son’s home were ransacked.
The Xixia District Procuratorate approved Ms. Luo’s arrest on September 24, 2020. The prosecutor indicted her around December 23 and moved her case to the Xixia District Court.
Ms. Luo stood trial on January 12, 2021. Her lawyer and family were informed on March 30 that she was sentenced to four years with a 20,000-yuan fine. The judge waited a month before sending them the verdict.
Past Persecution
Since the onset of the persecution in 1999, Ms. Luo has been subjected to constant harassment, arrests, and detention for upholding her faith in Falun Gong.
In May 2001, she was severely injured in her spine and pelvis while trying to escape an arrest.
She was arrested on June 15, 2006, for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was given one year at the Ningxia Women’s Forced Labor Camp. The guards forced her to work over ten hours each day without pay. The intensive labor caused her legs to swell and she had difficulty using the toilet.
Her next arrest was on February 16, 2013, while distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. After she held a hunger strike to protest the persecution at Wuzhong City Detention Center, an officer surnamed Wang slapped her in the face and verbally abused her.
Ms. Luo suffered several episodes of heart attacks and was released on medical parole, after paying a 2,000 yuan bond.
Ms. Luo was arrested one more time on March 25, 2014, with her husband Mr. Wang Xiangchen, for talking to people about Falun Gong. Their home was ransacked. Due to her high blood pressure, the detention center refused to accept her. But her husband was detained for 12 days.
On July 4, 2014, the Litong District Court sentenced Ms. Luo to four years. She was taken back into custody at the Qingtongxia Detention Center on the same day and later transferred to the Ningxia Women’s Prison.
In the prison, she was shocked by electric batons, hung up, handcuffed behind her back, forced to squat or stand for long hours and held in solitary confinement for extended periods of time. The guards and inmates arbitrarily beat her, slammed her head against the wall or tapped her mouth. She barely survived the torture and was released on June 12, 2018.
