(Minghui.org) Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province, is notorious for its brainwashing centers aimed to force steadfast Falun Gong practitioners to renounce their faith. Among all the established sites, the Yusunshan Brainwashing Center in Jianghan District is one of the leading places to persecute practitioners using both physical and mental torment.
24/7 Surveillance
Every Falun Gong practitioner detained at the Yusunshan Brainwashing Center is watched by two staffers every day around the clock, including when they are using the restroom. The monitors decide how much of what food to give the practitioners at what time, as well as determine when they can sleep at night. Medical personnel come in every day to take the practitioners’ blood pressure. Except for the restrooms, there are surveillance cameras everywhere, in all rooms and hallways.
There are eight “instructors” in the brainwashing center, organized into two teams working under a four-day rotation. Other support personnel, such as the kitchen crew, also work in shifts of four days.
Physical Torture
The brainwashing center collects extensive information about the practitioners and their family situations by asking them questions. Based on this information, they develop customized brainwashing plans for each practitioner.
Practitioners are forced to watch propaganda videos defaming Falun Gong every day. The monitors also threaten them with extended detention and prison sentences. For those who remain firm in their faith, the monitors add psychiatric drugs to their food and when their will is weakened, deceive them into signing statements to renounce Falun Gong.
When these methods fail to “transform” the practitioners, the monitors force practitioners to get up early to clean the building and then stand motionless from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., every day, for months on end. The monitors can arbitrarily extend the standing hours, often by two hours. This torture causes practitioners’ legs and feet to become extremely swollen. While standing, they are still forced to watch propaganda videos. After the standing session ends, four staffers will grab a practitioner’s hands to “write” statements renouncing Falun Gong and smearing the founder of Falun Gong.
Mental Manipulation
In addition to the standing torture and watching propaganda videos, the monitors also force practitioners to copy the prison sentencing guidelines as a way of intimidation. If the practitioners comply, they are given extra food, with meat. Even after a practitioner is forced to renounce Falun Gong against their will, the monitors still force them to verbally abuse Falun Gong’s founder before each meal.
A person named Chen Bin not only gave up practicing Falun Gong himself, but also worked with the authorities to “transform” other practitioners. He often misinterprets Falun Gong’s teachings, gives lectures that slander Falun Gong, and also arranges the practitioners to “study” more slanderous propaganda materials.
After practitioners finish the “curriculum,” they have to take exams to test their “new attitudes” towards Falun Gong and its founder. Anyone who writes “Falun Dafa is good” will have their detention extended by 20 days and be forced to “study” more brainwashing materials.
In order to be released, the practitioners have to pass the “exam,” write a statement to renounce and denounce Falun Gong and then read it publicly. After the evaluation committee approves the release, the practitioners will be picked up by staffers from their residential committee before they are finally allowed to go home.
