A Heyuan City, Guangdong Province resident developed uterine cancer while serving a four-year-and-three-month prison term for her faith in Falun Gong. Her parole request was denied and she remained jailed until her term ended in December 2022. Her condition kept deteriorating after her release and she died on December 14, 2024. She was 66.

Ms. Qiu Hannong’s passing capped years of suffering after the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999. For upholding her faith, Ms. Qiu was arrested three times and incarcerated twice for a total of seven years and three months.

Ms. Qiu was first arrested at home by officers from the Dongyuan County Police Department and Chuantang Police Station on August 3, 2013. Her TV and other personal property was confiscated. While keeping her in custody, the police also broke into her daughter’s home on August 6 and confiscated a photo of Falun Gong’s founder. They ordered her daughter to pay 500 yuan and threatened to bankrupt her if she didn’t comply.

Ms. Qiu was arrested again in September 2013 for talking to people about Falun Gong, and was given a three-year labor camp term.

Officers from the Dongyuan County Domestic Security Division raided Ms. Qiu’s home on September 9, 2018 and arrested her two days later. Her family went to the Dongyuan County Police Department on September 21 to demand her release, but were intimidated and driven away. The police handcuffed three family members for several hours.

Ms. Qiu was held at the Dongyuan County Detention Center. Her family returned to the police department and Political and Legal Affairs Committee multiple times to demand her release, but to no avail.

Ms. Qiu appeared in the Yuancheng District Court on April 4, 2019 and was sentenced to four years and three months, with a 3,000-yuan fine.

Due to the persecution over the years, Ms. Qiu developed uterine cancer while serving time at the Guangdong Province Women’s Prison. Despite her condition, the prison refused to release her on medical parole. After Ms. Qiu was released after serving the full term, her family would not allow her to resume practicing Falun Gong. Her condition kept worsening and she passed away on December 14, 2024.
