(Minghui.org) The Cangzhou City Detention Center in Hebei Province is located on the east side of the city. While the exterior of the facility underwent extensive renovation, the interior, which can only be entered after passing through five gates, remains the same as 30 years ago, with very poor living conditions. Inmates and Falun Gong practitioners detained in this facility are subjected to all kinds of abuse.

Humiliating Strip-searches

Upon admission to the detention center, all detainees get their hair cut very short. They are also strip-searched in the lobby by the guards. After they are assigned to different cells, the head inmates of the cells strip-search them again. In addition, the guards also come to each cell and strip-search everyone twice a day; everyone is forced to place their hands on the bed and lift their legs for the guards to see if they have injuries on their feet. Even after someone returns to the cell after meeting with their lawyers or being interrogated by the police, they are also strip-searched. If someone tries to resist the humiliating searches, the guards verbally abuse them.

Deplorable Living Conditions

The beds in the detention center are large and can each sleep 20 people. But 40 people often have to share a bed. They have to sleep on their sides and can’t turn over. The guards have many other requirements about sleeping postures: detainees can’t cover their face during sleep, nor can they place their arms near their heads or bend their legs. If they violate the rules, they are woken up to correct their postures.

In addition to sharing one bed, the 40 detainees also have to share one water faucet and restroom. There are often long lines for doing laundry, taking showers or washing dishes.

Most people, including regular inmates and Falun Gong practitioners, aren’t allowed to write or call their family members. When their families deliver clothes to them, the clothes have to be only white or black.

One Falun Gong practitioner was once force-fed for over 40 days after staging a hunger strike to protest the persecution.
