Such a successful businessman, however, was arrested on July 23, 1999 simply for practicing Falun Gong. He was not released until 15 days later. After another arrest months later, he was sentenced to four years in prison on July 20, 2001.

His business ventures collapsed during his prison term. After he was released in 2015, he was saddened to see that his family and businesses owed more than 100 million yuan in debt. His son was implicated in the persecution and later arrested too. Mr. Yang was deeply traumatized and had a car accident on August 17, 2016. He died on the same day.
