An 86-year-old woman in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, died on April 21, 2023, while still awaiting trial for her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Han Junyi’s passing capped her decades of suffering during the persecution of Falun Gong. She was given one year of forced labor in 2003, sentenced to three years in prison following an arrest on June 23, 2005, and given another four years of prison after being arrested on August 10, 2008. Additionally, she was held at brainwashing centers twice.

She was released from prison on August 10, 2012, only to be arrested again four months later, on December 21. The police released her late that night.

Another arrest took place on April 26, 2015 after she was reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. The police interrogated her before taking her home to raid her place. She was released at an unknown time.

The police pried open Ms. Han’s home on November 23, 2019 when no one was around. She went to the local police station to inquire about the situation two days later and was arrested instead. The police took her for a physical examination and the local detention center declined to admit her due to her poor health. Her daughter was notified the next day at noon to pick her up and pay a 1,000-yuan fine for her. Her daughter refused to pay the fine and the police relented.

Around mid-July 2020, Ms. Han saw a piece of paper slipped under her door. It was an indictment of her dated July 9 that year. While she was awaiting trial, the police raided her home again on March 12, 2021, the ninth time since the persecution began in 1999. Four days later, on March 16, she was put under house arrest.

The relentless persecution eventually claimed Ms. Han’s life on April 21, 2023.
