(Minghui.org) A 77-year-old woman in Jilin City, Jilin Province, was admitted to Jilin Province Women’s Prison on May 15, 2025, to serve a prison term she was given in 2019 for refusing to give up her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Wu Zhiqin was arrested in 2019 for talking to people about Falun Gong. While she was released on bail due to dangerously high blood pressure, the police still submitted her case to the Chuanying District Procuratorate. After she was indicted, staffers from the Chuanying District Court harassed her many time. They also forced her to write a statement to renounce Falun Gong against her will and pay a 3,000-yuan fine.

Ms. Wu was later sentenced to two years and eight months. The court said that the sentence was eight months shorter than they had planned to hand down because she paid the 3000-yuan fine. As she was found to have persistently high blood pressure, she was released on medical parole.

On April 15, 2025, several court employees showed up at Ms. Wu’s home and took her to the Jilin City Detention Center over her family’s strong objection. The authorities transferred her to prison on May 15, without informing her family.

Over the past few years, the Chinese Communist Party has ramped up the persecution against elderly practitioners, sometimes even sentencing those in their 80s.

Mr. Guo Yunian, then 85, of Jilin City, Jilin Province, was arrested at home on July 19, 2019. He was sentenced to six years later that month. On August 6, 2020, the police took Mr. Guo to the Jilin Prison. His family wasn’t allowed to visit him or send him clothes or daily necessities.

Mr. Xin Yuliang, then 88, a retired electrical engineer in Jilin City, Jilin Province, was arrested in August 2020, when he went out with three other practitioners to hang up banners with information about Falun Gong. He was tried a year later in August 2021 and sentenced to one year. He was taken to the Gongzhuling Prison in mid-September that year.
