(Minghui.org) A woman in Tai’an City, Shandong Province, was sentenced to three years in June 2019 for practicing Falun Gong. Although she was allowed to serve time at home, the authorities took her back into custody on June 5, 2025 to re-serve the expired term.
Ms. Ma Junting was already incapacitated before her latest arrest. Without proper care in prison, her condition quickly deteriorated and she died two months later, on August 7, 2025. She was 86.
The ordeal of Ms. Ma, a retired engineer and professor from Shandong University of Science and Technology, stemmed from her arrest in June 2018. She was sentenced to three and a half years and fined 30,000 yuan on June 13, 2019. Because she was still on probation from an earlier three-year term (also for practicing Falun Gong), the judge in charge of her case suspended the probation and ordered her to serve a combined five-year term. He allowed her to serve time at home due to her advanced age.
The local police unexpectedly came to Ms. Ma’s home in February 2025, and said the prison term she served at home didn’t count. She was ordered to re-serve the time in prison. She was already wheelchair-bound, incapacitated and incontinent at that time. The police threats worsened her condition and she had to be hospitalized.
As soon as Ms. Ma’s condition stabilized, the police took her to the Shandong Province Women’s Prison on June 5, 2025. She was unable to use the restroom, take showers or wash her clothing while in the prison. Her life was miserable. In just two months, she fell into a coma and was released on parole. Her family rushed her to a hospital but she died a few days later on August 7.
Similar to Ms. Ma, two other Falun Gong practitioners in Tai’an City, Ms. Han Yuehua, 84, and Ms. Lu Keqin, 78, were also sent to prison to re-serve expired prison terms given in 2019. Ms. Han and Ms. Lu’s families are deeply worried about their health given their advanced ages and the abuses they might suffer while in prison.
