Ms. Yang Deying from Kunming City, Yunnan Province, was forced to live away from home for years to avoid being persecuted because she practiced Falun Gong. The hardship of life and mental distress took a toll on her health. She died in May 2025. She was 76.
Ms. Yang began practicing Falun Gong in early 1999. Many of her ailments, including heart disease, insomnia, lumbar and cervical spondylosis, rheumatoid arthritis, skin diseases, and bronchitis, all disappeared. After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in July 1999, she was repeatedly arrested and given two prison terms and one labor camp term totaling 8 years.
Ms. Yang was arrested on January 30, 2005, for distributing slips of paper on which she wrote: “Falun Dafa Is Good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance Is Good.” She was held in the Xishan District Detention Center and given two years of forced labor on March 1, 2005. She served time at Yunnan Women’s Forced Labor Camp and was released in November 2006.
Ms. Yang was arrested again on May 20, 2008 and taken to the Panlong District First Detention Center. She was sentenced to three years by the Kunming City Intermediate Court in February 2009. While serving time at the Yunnan Province Second Woman’s Prison, she was tortured for refusing to give up her faith. Two inmates were assigned to monitor her around the clock. She was forced to sit on a small stool without moving for 15 hours a day, which caused the flesh on her buttocks to fester and bleed. She was released on on May 19, 2011.
Ms. Yang was arrested another time on September 19, 2012 for distributing Falun Gong materials. After one year at the Guandu District Detention Center, she was sentenced to another three years in the Yunnan Province Second Woman’s Prison by the Kunming City Intermediate Court.
The police attempted to arrest her again on September 25, 2019. Because she wasn’t home, the police arrested her roommate, Ms. Kuang Deying. When Ms. Yang returned days later, she was shocked to see her place was ransacked and in shambles. Her Falun Gong books and portrait of Falun Gong’s founder were confiscated. She was forced to leave home to avoid the persecution.
While distributing Falun Gong materials in Shanchong Village on February 1, 2020, Ms. Yang was stopped by a woman and then arrested by officers from the Haikou Police Station. Two officers from the Xishan District Domestic Security Office were called in to interrogate her. She refused to answer any questions and was taken to the Jinniu Police Station. The police called her son and attempted, unsuccessfully, to have him make her talk. She was released that evening.
Ms. Yang was forced to live away from home to avoid the police. The police soon located her. Two officers were stationed outside her rental apartment every day since March 23, 2020. They told her neighbors to be on the lookout for her, and even offered a reward to anyone who reported her whereabouts. She was forced to move again.
The police attempted to harass Ms. Yang again in April 2021. As she wasn’t home, they showed her photo to her neighbors and asked if they had seen her.
Years of constant moving and the mental distress took a toll on Ms. Yang’s health. She died in May 2025.
