(Minghui.org) Since childhood, I have carried a deeply rooted knot in my heart. It had been there so long that I had grown used to it: I disliked my stepfather.

My father passed away when I was seven. Because I was young, I did not feel much grief. But from the time my stepfather joined our family, I was filled with disdain and resentment toward him. I often felt that perhaps we had a negative predestined relationship from a previous life. He seemed to have almost every quality I could dislike in a person.

Yet this was someone I had to live with every day under the same roof. I felt miserable. How I wished he were not part of my life, so my mother and I could live alone together. When my stepfather went away on business or traveled, those were my happiest times.

Because I did not want to hurt my parents, I buried these feelings deeply. I tried to treat my stepfather with appropriate respect, although we often argued.

After I grew up and moved abroad, I began cultivating. Because of visa issues, my stepfather had never been able to visit Canada, so naturally there were no direct conflicts between us. When feelings of dislike toward him occasionally surfaced in my mind, I did not take them seriously and cultivated them away. I usually just let those thoughts pass. That changed this year.

My stepfather finally received his visa and came to Canada with my mother. Once again, the three of us were living under the same roof. Immediately, all those old feelings returned. I disliked everything about him and wanted to stay as far away from him as possible. At the same time, I forced myself to endure the discomfort and treat him as a father.

I even thought I was doing quite well. Although I disliked him so much, I still tried to respect him and observe the proper courtesies. I felt I had done a pretty good job.

After some time, my stepfather suddenly expressed his dissatisfaction with me over a small matter. He said he felt that I looked down on him and disliked him, and that he could not feel the closeness of a daughter from me. Hearing him voice his resentment brought out all the resentment I had buried for so many years. The conflict between us was finally exposed.

Seeing his anger, I bluntly told him that if he couldn’t find any hope in me being a satisfying daughter, he could find another family and have a child of his own.

He said he would no longer consider me his daughter, would never speak to me again, and wanted to return to China immediately. Our family relationship reached its lowest point ever.

For years, I had compromised and endured grievances to maintain harmony in the family, yet this was the result. This painful reality forced me to reflect: As a cultivator, where had I gone wrong?

I quickly realized that during arguments, whenever I felt the other person was being hostile, trying to overpower me, belittle me, or suppress me, my competitive mentality would arise. I refused to give in. I wanted to argue back and overpower the other person.

Sometimes this competitive mentality appeared in another distorted form: “This is just how I am. What are you going to do about it?”

I also carried strong feelings of disdain and resentment. Combined with my competitive mentality, they made me speak without considering the other person’s feelings. I said hurtful things. I lacked kindness, let alone compassion.

My stepfather said he could feel that I looked down on him and disliked him, and that hurt him. Before that, I had always thought I was doing quite well because outwardly I treated him politely and observed the proper courtesies.

I now saw that when we carry dislike and resentment toward another person, no matter how polite we appear on the surface, that unkind state of mind will inevitably create karma and hurt others. Perhaps even a single look at someone can create karma without us realizing it.

Why does Master ask us to eliminate attachments? At my present level of understanding, attachments lead us away from Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. They cause us to create karma, and they pull a life downward.

Disliking or resenting someone is a form of qing. Strong dislike, just like strong preference, is an attachment. If this state of mind does not fundamentally change, then no matter how well we behave on the surface, it is not cultivation.

A few days later, I calmly and sincerely apologized to my stepfather. He accepted my apology. Our father-daughter relationship went from being completely broken to being as though nothing had happened. In fact, it became even better than before. The entire process took only about a week. It seemed miraculous, yet completely natural.

Now, when discomfort or dislike toward my stepfather arises, I strongly think of one great word in my mind: Compassion. I let it fill my mind, covering and dissolving all the negative thoughts.

Actually, I had sincerely apologized to my stepfather once before, but he had seemed not to hear me and continued ignoring me. Over the next few days, other attachments were exposed. I felt that my mother held my stepfather and me to different standards, and I thought it was unfair. I also saw my qing toward my mother. After studying the Fa, I understood that my sense of unfairness came from selfishness.

Once I clearly saw and let go of the attachments behind my anger, sadness, and other emotions, my stepfather accepted my apology. He then told me that when I had apologized a few days earlier, he had been wearing headphones and had not heard me at all.

Master’s arrangements are so subtle and profound. To help us succeed in cultivation, Master uses many different ways to let us see our attachments and shortcomings. We do not need to worry that we will fail to discover our attachments. What we should be concerned about is whether, when conflicts arise, we are willing to face and let go of them.

Without Dafa, my family relationship would have remained an impossible knot, with everyone living in pain.

Dafa was not taught to resolve family or social relationships. Yet Dafa fundamentally rectifies countless distorted hearts, allowing lives to receive true salvation and happiness. I write this experience simply to express my gratitude to Master.

Experience from Shen Yun Performances

I would also like to share an experience from this year’s Shen Yun performances. It gave me a very deep understanding of sending forth righteous thoughts.

My pipa teacher is an 86-year-old retired pipa professor. She has extensive performance experience in China and is also a devout Christian.

In previous years, whenever I recommended Shen Yun to her, she declined my invitation. She said she had seen so many performances already and that our beliefs were different.

This year, she initially refused again. But during our conversation, something changed her mind, and she agreed to go with me.

Early on the morning of the performance, I called to confirm when I would pick her up. Unexpectedly, she told me she could no longer go. When she woke up that morning, she had suddenly developed a severe cold. Her whole body felt terrible, and she said she simply could not leave the house.

I was surprised—not only because of the timing, but because I had known her for years and she had never seen her sick. She had always proudly told me that she had not been ill for decades. On the phone, she firmly said she could not go. I told her to rest and said I would visit her shortly.

After hanging up, I was shocked. I knew that during that period of time, I had not been sending forth righteous thoughts well. A sentient being who should be saved was being blocked at the very last moment. The battle between good and evil was unfolding clearly before my eyes.

Demonic interference generally has to conform to the principles of the human world, and sometimes it can be very deceptive. But interference this blatant and extreme showed me how rampant the evil was—and how insufficiently I had been eliminating it.

I immediately sat in the lotus position and began sending forth righteous thoughts. The situation was right in front of me, and time was short, so my mind was extremely focused. I earnestly sent forth righteous thoughts to eliminate the evil interfering with my teacher seeing Shen Yun. I continued for about half an hour.

A little later, I went to her home at the time we had originally arranged, still feeling somewhat uncertain. To my surprise, when I arrived, my teacher was already dressed and ready. Without another word, she got into my car and went with me to the performance.

She told me that after our phone call, she suddenly began to feel better. She took a shower and thought perhaps she could go out after all. But when her daughter heard she was going to see Shen Yun, she had harshly scolded her. My teacher had become so angry that her whole body trembled, and this had made her even more determined to go.

She told me that she now felt much better, but she could not understand how the illness had come and gone so quickly. Puzzled, she said, “Was I just pretending to be sick?” I couldn’t help finding that amusing.

During the performance, my teacher commented on the performers, estimating how many years of training they had and evaluating the singing. I simply listened and smiled without saying much.

After the performance, however, she was more excited than I had ever seen her. She said the dancers were especially upright and completely different from those in China. She repeatedly said that the program portraying the persecution of Falun Gong felt very real. What moved her deeply was that despite suffering so much, there was not the slightest trace of hatred in the performance.

After watching Shen Yun, all of my teacher’s discomfort completely disappeared. Every symptom of the severe cold was gone, and she was full of energy.

The next day, she told me that her daughter’s attitude toward her had also returned to normal, as though nothing had happened.

I personally witnessed a life standing at the critical point of whether she could be saved. The evil tried to prevent her from being saved. Dafa disciples eliminated the evil to save people. After this life went through a test and eliminated some karma through the tribulation, she was finally able to see Shen Yun. After being saved, she displayed an entirely new state of being.

Everything I witnessed was real and unmistakable. My enlightenment quality is not very good, and I cultivate with my celestial eye closed. Sometimes, without realizing it, I fall back into ordinary people’s ways of thinking and state of mind.

Master allowed me to personally witness the process of a life being saved, so I could understand what profound heavenly secrets and responsibilities lie within what appears to be ordinary everyday life. I am grateful to Master.

Thank you, Master. Thank you, fellow practitioners.
