A woman in Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province was tortured to death at the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison in May 2026 because she refused to renounce her faith in Falun Gong. She was 63.

Ms. Lyu Yinghua had been sentenced to death with reprieve for a murder, which was later reduced to life imprisonment. While she was held at the Tangyuan County Detention Center in January 2001, someone told her about Falun Gong and she began practicing it. After her transfer to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison in August 2002, she remained firm in her faith and was subjected to various torture methods. Unlike other inmates on life sentences, the prison refused to further reduce her term.

Between 2001 and 2013, Ms. Lyu was placed in solitary confinement 18 times. She sustained injuries to her leg and was released from confinement before she became permanently disabled. After that, she was held in the infirmary division.

The authorities had her daughter write her a letter in an attempt to persuade her to renounce Falun Gong. She refused, and her daughter never visited her again.

Solitary Confinement and Other Torture

Ms. Lyu was placed in solitary confinement on August 11, 2003. Guard Zhang Chunhua kicked her in the head, tied her up, and taped her mouth. Another guard, Wang Yali, ordered the inmates to shackle her. She was left sitting on the concrete floor, unable to keep her back straight. When it got colder, the guards opened the window instead of turning on the heat. As a result, her feet suffered frostbite.

In early 2004, guards Zhang and Zheng Jie dragged Ms. Lyu by the neck to the workshop to force her to do hard labor. She had difficulty breathing. Deep bruises appeared on her neck and lasted for a few days. They also handcuffed her and forced her to sit on the concrete floor in only a thin pair of pants for a month.

On March 8, 2004, the guards hung her by her wrists with her feet off the ground. After an hour of this torture, she was sweating all over. Her body shook uncontrollably. Her wrists were severely injured, and her hands remained swollen for over three months.

Torture reenactment: hung up

On March 25, 2004, guards Zheng and Zhang tied her hands behind her back and hung her up by the wrists. Her hands turned dark. That evening, they took her to solitary confinement. She was handcuffed to the bed. Because of the low temperature, she had a heart attack and couldn’t move. Yet, guard Wang took away her winter pants and kept the window open. They didn’t provide her with enough food, either.

During her five months in solitary confinement, Ms. Lyu went on a two-month hunger strike. She became malnourished, emaciated, and incapacitated. She was handcuffed to the bed the entire time and wasn’t released even when she needed to use the restroom. She felt she was dying.

After she was moved back to a regular cell, the guards removed the mattress from her bed and made her sleep on the bare wooden board. Some inmates shared their comforter with her to use as padding. She was so weak that she couldn’t lift a water thermos. Just two months later, she was sent back to solitary confinement for doing Falun Gong exercises.

Guard Zheng forced her to squat, hung her up by the wrists, slapped her in the face, and kicked her in the head. They also taped her mouth shut for 11 days.

In March 2005, the guards hung her up again for two hours. Her hands turned dark purple. She was then put in solitary confinement again and handcuffed to a ring fixed in the ground from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. She went on a hunger strike in protest and experienced pain throughout her body. For 13 days, she couldn’t sleep. The guards administered IV drips to sustain her life. Five months later, when she was carried out of solitary confinement, her weight had dropped from 150 pounds to 100 pounds.

In January 2006, Ms. Lyu was tied to a heater and suffered additional injuries to her arms.

That same year, she was moved to a room on the north side. Inmates were assigned to watch her around the clock. She wasn’t allowed to leave the room for six years.

Multiple Heart Attacks

On February 14, 2011, the guards searched all of the Falun Gong practitioners who were jailed there. They confiscated the practitioners’ Falun Gong books and other related materials. The guards also removed the practitioners’ own clothes and gave them only those marked “inmate.” (Editor’s note: Many practitioners refused to wear the inmate uniform as a form of protest against the persecution. Forcing them to wear the uniform is a way to force them to submit to the authorities.)

Guard Wang replaced the inmate assigned to watch Ms. Lyu with Gao Yanping, who was notorious for torturing Falun Gong practitioners. Ms. Lyu became emaciated in a short period of time and suffered multiple heart attacks.

She had another heart attack when the guards confiscated her hand-copied Zhuan Falun, the main text of Falun Gong. Despite her condition, the guards carried her downstairs and placed her in a windy area. Hours later, they took her to the prison hospital, and worked with the doctor to produce a fake report saying she was healthy.

On the evening of January 6, 2013, guards Li Han and Qu Jialiang forced Ms. Lyu to participate in a roll call, despite her suffering from high blood pressure and a severe headache. She was made to stand by a window. When she could no longer stand, she squatted. Guard Qu slapped her repeatedly and verbally abused her.

Fearing that Qu might beat Ms. Lyu to death, two inmates tried to stop him. However, Qu began kicking her with his heavy boots. He didn’t stop until she passed out. Meanwhile, guard Wang Yonghui stood aside and watched with a smirk on her face. She also ordered the inmates in the nearby cells to close their cell doors.

Ms. Lyu had another heart attack and was taken to the hospital for resuscitation.
