(Minghui.org) In the spring of 2020, Weng Cheng-hung found a lump behind his right knee. At first, he did not pay much attention to it. He was running marathons at the time, and he assumed the swelling was simply due to strenuous training. Later, an MRI scan at the hospital revealed a tumor measuring approximately ten centimeters long and six centimeters wide.

His doctor looked gravely at the tumor test results and said, “This is a malignant tumor,” and advised surgery was deemed risky because the tumor was close to nerves and arteries. Weng asked the doctor how long the tumor had been growing and why he had become sick. However, the doctor said it was necessary to remove it to confirm whether it was benign or malignant.

After he learned of the diagnosis, Weng Cheng-hung felt sad and helpless. He had always cared about his health and would often run, even participating in marathons. He could not understand why he would develop cancer.

Low Point After Cancer Diagnosis

As he was lying on the operating table before the surgery, Cheng-hung was overwhelmed with helplessness. The attending physician explained that the most important thing was to surgically remove the tumor. Cheng-hung felt uneasy after hearing that, thinking that if even he did not know the reason for the illness, would he be able to recover after the operation?

After the tumor was removed, the doctor explained that as the tumor was large, some tumor tissue may have been left behind, and radiotherapy was required. However, side effects could occur, including fibrosis, scarring, hardening, and loss of elasticity. Also, the knee joint might degenerate prematurely, requiring joint replacement even before reaching retirement age.

At this Cheng-hung’s spirits hit rock bottom, and he felt that he had lost control over his life saying “Oh, my God! It feels like my life is not really my own.” Facing the complicated medical situation, he felt he had no choice but to receive treatment as suggested by the doctor. However, questions remained: could he fully recover after the treatment? What does the future hold? All this remained uncertain.

Deciding to Take Up the Practice of Falun Gong

After the surgery, Cheng-hung remembered that his parents were Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa) practitioners.

He had witnessed that, after practicing Falun Dafa, his mom, who had always been strict, became gentle and kind. Her facial expressions also became kind and compassionate, and she became a completely different person. He knew that Falun Dafa was a good practice. In the past, he had chosen not to practice because he thought it was a lot of hard work to get up so early in the morning.

This major turning point in life became a golden opportunity to start cultivating. He said, “Since I have already hit rock bottom, I should just walk this cultivation path well. If I were to keep going along as before, I don’t know if there would be another tumor in the future. I knew in my mind that there was a better method, so I decided to start cultivating.”

However, his cultivation path was not easy. During the early morning practice, he required himself to meditate in the full lotus position for one hour. During that hour, his legs would be in excruciating pain, as if being run over by a car. His parents would accompany him to practice in the morning, but he was still reluctant to practice every day. “While I was doing the exercises, I would keep wondering when it would end. It was extremely painful. Since my right foot was swollen, it felt even more painful,” he said.

However, driven by a sense of conviction, he continued the morning exercises even though there were no obvious changes in his body.

Choosing Honesty In the Face of Gain and Loss

After two or three months, as his health gradually stabilized, Cheng-hung wanted to return to the workforce. He had excelled in academics and had always been of good moral character since childhood. He graduated from Tsing Hua University’s Graduate School of Business. His past experience included processing massive data, including handling high-volume, high-velocity, and multi-format data using distributed systems or cloud tools rather than basic spreadsheets. He also had experience in startups. However, his sudden illness had forced him to pause and quit his job to focus on fighting cancer.

Now he was ready for a fresh start, and through a friend’s recommendation, he had an opportunity to work as a financial advisor at a foreign investment company. He was hired after being interviewed.

After he received the offer letter and had to fill out his personal information and physical condition, a test arose. There was a question: “Have you ever had cancer?”

At that time, he looked at the offer letter for some time in a whirlwind of emotion; this was a hard-won financial advisor position at a foreign company. He thought: This is a great new starting point in life, and if I honestly select “yes,” would the company revoke the offer due to health risks? Would this directly ruin the opportunity to start afresh?

He discussed it with his mom and considered whether there was a way to gloss over it or just not write it down. They thought it through and understood that this form asked for an established fact. They thought that if he did not answer honestly, he would not be in accordance with a core principle of Falun Dafa — Truthfulness. In the end, Cheng-hung decided to give up his attachment to worrying over fame and gain. He decided to check the selection “Yes.”

He thought that it would indeed be unfortunate if he lost this job due to truthful disclosure; however, it would also mean that the position was not arranged for him by the divine. “Then no problem, I will find other job opportunities,” he said.

After he submitted his personal information, something magical happened. When he was meditating the next morning, he suddenly felt that a large mass of long-accumulated material in his leg was shaved off. The heavy and swollen feeling suddenly disappeared. His leg suddenly stopped hurting so much!

He shared, “Master has taught in the Fa that when we practice, the body and xinxing correspond with each other. My understanding is that when the xinxing is elevated, the body would undergo obvious changes. This was my first time feeling it so clearly!”

As he kept studying the Fa and doing the exercises, he felt that his physical condition kept improving. He used to be relatively weak physically, so his hands and feet would be cold in the winter, and he often had seasonal allergies. Those conditions gradually disappeared. His right leg that was swollen and hard to bend also slowly returned to normal — progressing from being able to squat to walking normally to eventually running again. Also, even after six years, the potential leg fibrosis that the doctor warned of had not happened.

Letting Go of Attachments and Tolerating Others at Work

Cheng-hung worked at several jobs after graduation, but he left each job due to not seeing future prospects or having conflicts with upper management. This time, he was starting a new job in a brand new field. His job required understanding clients’ financial needs and designing tailored financial plans. After clarifying the clients’ financial situation, he would hand it over to the planning department to develop a detailed implementation plan.

He had high standards for his work quality. In the beginning, he frequently had conflicts with coworkers because he believed the reports written by the planning department had issues. Later, he reflected on himself according to a cultivator’s standards of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. He discovered that he cared too much about the reports because he did not want to lose face in front of clients. He also found that his standards were not necessarily correct. Having such high standards for reports kept him tense and also created immense pressure on his colleagues.

Thinking at it from a different angle, maybe his colleagues already did their best, or maybe they had different characteristics. Holding onto one’s own standards put his colleagues in a difficult position. “Looking at it with a more inclusive mindset, I just needed to supplement what was lacking.”

As he continued cultivating, his heart expanded, and he was more able to understand and embrace other people and could supplement anything that was lacking. The relationship with his co-workers became increasingly harmonious. He can now calm his heart, and he no longer worries about immediate gains and losses, and walks more steadily in his new field.

As electronic devices are becoming more popular and artificial intelligence is quickly advancing, the pace of society is faster, and people increasingly feel restless and anxious. After practicing Falun Dafa, Cheng-hung personally experienced that studying the Fa and doing the exercises helped him to remain calm and hence more capable of looking at all people, things, and events positively, as well as have an optimistic attitude based on Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance in facing the diverse world.

As he continued to study the Fa and do the exercises, Cheng-hung became more pure physically and mentally. He became kinder and is moving toward the goal of becoming a better person. “In this vast mortal world, I finally found a home for my body and soul,” he said.
